Hard to get an idea from YouTube. I believe one of the tunes of his CD (on iTunes) was recorded using a Parker.

All due respect to Jim - a very fine player - but in my opinion no acoustic archtop can be judged by this recording method (quoted from the video comments):
"It is my Pod running a BF Deluxe model" Parker has many clips on his website of folks playing the guitars acoustically.

For looks and innovation and early model 16" L-5.
My Jazz teacher had a '34 L-5 and a similar aged Epi Emperor, he traded the Gibson as he felt the Epi superior. I'd add Stromberg into the mix. Certainly a Collings - although I've never seen one in the flesh. I'm told that Daniel Slaman (Netherlands) makes a very fine L-5 (1923) model. Dammit - he has one in stock - I wish you hadn't started this! |

Those Ken Parker guitars are something else. There are plenty of guys who can build $20k+ guitars and those are all well beyond my reach.
So far, I'll have to settle for the Greg German DB-7 I'm still paying off. I hope to order a CP Thornton after that. |

I referenced Slaman in post #34 as my choice of "holy grail"; either the nylon or more specifically the 1923 L-5... see link to 1923 project. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.nylonstringjazzguitar.com/ http://www.the1923project.com/ |

Wow!! Now that is truly lovely....As a new archtop owner and player I have come to realize that Archtops are not just beautiful instruments, capable of making wonderful music but often beautiful works of art! I admit I am intimidated by expensive guitars, since I feel my playing abilities won't ever match the price tag, but guitars like this Cremona are things of visual beauty that I could see owning..who knows, maybe I could learn to play well enough to do it justice! Ouch, that feels like GAS! |

Here's a true holy grail archtop, but unfortunately it's already spoken for:
Finding Charlie Christian’s Guitar: Lynn Wheelwright Interview/ My only issue with the situation is that he claims to have never played it.

I would agree that I am also nowhere near worthy to play it. At least let a modern great take it out for a spin.

If I were out looking, I'd like to come across old Carlo Greco & carved topped Bill Moll as well.
I only have one archtop, a Gibson L5CES Historic from 97'/98' and its so excellent I can't imagine there is anything better. I was in Mandolin Brothers and tried a non pickup orig D'Angelico and the L5 with those pick ups in there was so much better acousticlly I was very pleased. |
