Rory Gallagher. Guitarist with the Irish blues band Taste, and later had a very successful solo career. Mostly known as a Strat player, also played resonator and mandolin. Died too young in 1995.

Eddie Angel, Danny Amis.

Also check out the Delvon Lamar Organ Trio and The True Loves, because Jimmy James is amazing.

John Smith

Saw him play the Exchange Theatre in Manchester (UK) - in the round venue, artist on the floor, us all on tiered seating. One man, one microphone, four guitars...
An hour and a half of sheer magic.

I've seen Adrian a few times, he's a friend of a friend. Does a cracking version of Richard Thompson's 'Vincent Black Lightning'

Isaac Guillory.

Sadly taken from us about 20 years ago. He was a fantastic guitarist, singer and songwriter. He had it all: speed, finesse and taste. I only ever saw him play acoustic guitar but I imagine he was great on electric too.
I think he first became known as Al Stewart's guitarist in the early 70s. He was also Elkie Brooks' musical director at one point.

I first saw him in the mid-80s supporting Roy Harper. Must have attended 20 or so of his shows and had the pleasure of supporting him at a few of these too. He was a big inspiration and should have been better known as an artist.

Heck, any of you guys ever heard of Toby Walker?

His life long friend, Larry, once told me ''Toby could play ''The Stars and Stripes Forever'' while eating a baloney sandwich!

Sam Mitchell; an incredibly talented English slide and ragtime player who played mainly Nationals. He was an old drinking buddy of mine, very modest and who has played and recorded with some very familiar artists (The Who, Rod Stewart, Stefan Grossman etc). Sadly his demons caught up with him and he died, far too young. Here's one of my favourites:

Andrew Latimer has to be one of the best overlooked guitarists I've heard. Part of his obscurity probably owes to his lifelong work in the progressive music field. He was, in fact, awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2014 Progressive Music Awards. He has led the British band Camel since 1971 through the ups and downs of progressive music. He is so obscure that it is hard to find a good example on YouTube, but nevertheless, here is Stationary Traveler from 1981:

There are quite a few extremely talented guitarists who fly under the radar, but my favorite is Verlon Thompson.

+1. Rory played the heck out of his Strat and he was also a great entertainer on stage.

I first heard Joel Mabus play in the mid-70's when I lived in Lansing, MI. He was already great then and has only gotten more accomplished. He can also whip up a great banjo tune.

Jack Williams. Total command of the acoustic guitar in many styles.

Chuck Pyle. A friend once described his style as a jazz guitarist playing cowboy songs.

I'm partial to the electric guitarist that can perfectly compliment a singer songwriter on acoustic. Bo Ramsey (Greg Brown), Jason Wilber (John Prine), Nina Gerber (Kate Wolf).

I saw Rory support Dave Mason in the mid 70’s. Had never read of him prior, but he stole the show.

My teacher tried to turn me on to him, he was surprised I was already a fan.
