I love Martin guitars, for the most part. I love the history, the sound & the feel of them. My OM-28 is a marvelous Martin!

That being said...I played a Collings OM-1T with a cooked Sitka top a few weeks ago that was the best guitar I’ve ever played. Hands down...”angels singing” stuff, seriously. If I could have afforded it, I’d have taken it home. I can’t...so I didn’t. But, I think about it a lot. I almost wish I’d never played it.

It would be fun to go to a guitar shop with a friend (handing you guitars) and a blindfold (over your eyes), seeing how that goes.

I agree with the people who say "play a lot of guitars before buying one."

To me, the experience of an individual guitar trumps the brand name.

$4000 may not be enough...all the ones at my lgs start about $4500. But if it moves you, it moves you. They had a D1 with a baked top...I see the appeal.

Actually, any Froggy Bottom guitar would do the job, but try finding one for under $4k.

I have only had one. A 2014 D2H. I loved the neck carve much better than Martin low oval which I find too skinny up at the first fret. At first I liked the compound radius. But after a month I didn't pick it up as much. It offered a bright, lush tone that was good only for flatpicking bluegrass or strumming rhythms which I can mimic on one of my other guitars. I really liked the lows and the low mids.... no mud at all, with a sweet lushness. Off it went. Not enough personality or dynamic range to warrant further exploration.

I own a real nice Taylor. I love Collings, too. But if you want a Martin-type guitar, you probably should get a Martin -- and Four Large will buy you a pretty nice Martin. I spent a fair amount of time playing Martins last week. The vintage ones I got to play were among the best-sounding guitars I've ever put my hands on (I tend to like large guitars, but I played an old OO that sounded enormous and sweet and weighed practically nothing). Even the inexpensive Martins with dead strings at Guitar Center had character.

Buy a Collings if you want that sound, but if you're looking for the Martin sound it is hard (though not impossible) to beat the original, and it may be impossible to beat the original in terms of value.

Hi folks, I've read that many dislike the sound of Collings guitars.
Ok, but someone reminded me of this video today and I wonder if smeone -who dislikes the Collings sound could describe what is lacking or ??

forget the old git attemping to play these two - I'd just like your opinion on these two.

ok ok... I did it.

It wasn't $4k either... quite a bit more. Collings -- fricken insanely beautiful guitar.

Both have Elixirs on... here's a quick comparo between the BR-43 and the JL OM1

Congrats man! You can hear a major difference even through my tinny workplace speakers. Now for the important question. What are you getting for your next Collings?
