Not a pawn shop but a tiny little music store in Hobart Tasmania selling second hand gear.
Hanging on that back wall was an Epiphone EJ-200. They got it down for me. Very clean with fresh strings in perfect tune. Included hard case. Negotiated price down a little. Paid US$272. Got it home and went over it more carefully - condition is really excellent, not a single ding anywhere. p.s. Wade Hampton from Alaska has seen this store on his trip downunder!

I used to say "no," that you can't get a good deal at a pawn shop. However, I think if you have the right set of circumstances, you still can. If a shop has had a guitar (or other instrument) sitting on a guitar for a long time, the shop may just want to get rid of it, even if it's high-end. Also, if a pawn shop is in a small town where not a lot of people play, then a custom/specialized instrument may go for a good price. Cheap instruments is what brings in the dollars around here.

I was in a semi-local pawn shop two weeks ago that had a couple interesting guitars, a Blueridge BR-160 and Gibson SJ-200 in ebony. Both played pretty well and were just ok, cosmetically. Price wise, the pawn shop sells on Reverb. That pretty much sums it up.

A pawn shop is going to check prices on the internet so they will sell accordingly. Once I did see a very nice Martin, played beautiful and looked up the price when I got home. It was a really good deal. The only thing was on the back, someone wrote in magic marker their name. I didnt end up buying it. About 2 weeks had past and went again and it was gone.

You know, years ago (20 or so), there were deals to be had. Pawn shops loaned money on guitars, tools, appliances and then sold them for the debt plus a 'fee' to pay it off when the people they loaned to didn't pay up. Then pawn shops began to search eBay, Blue Book etc for actual used value of said instruments, and they raised the prices accordingly. Since that time, good deals and pawn shops kind of parted ways. A year ago, I wanted a particular Bose BlueTooth speaker they don't make any more (have not for 4 years). Saw one in a local pawn shop and he wanted more than they used to cost new…quoted me the book value and everything. I said 'Thanks' and went on eBay and bought it for half what it cost new. I just quit going in because they are so disappointing. The only time I even go into one is when my wife is shopping for clothes in a store just down the strip mall from the 'big one' in our community. I'm afraid they have lost their allure for me. |

I actually have an acquaintance that got a Taylor 914ce ($4,500 value) for $800. If that's not a steal, I don't know what is.

I also purchased an Epiphone AJ220 SCS in MINT condition for $285 with a good quality soft case. I found out where the guitar was originally sold only a few months before. I'm quoting Australian dollars. I have had both guitars set up with bone saddles/nuts. Couldn't be more pleased.

I'm a pawnshop hound who frequents them daily during my sales route.
Every year I find several AMAZING deals on electric and acoustic guitars and basses and amps. It helps if you are a regular and get the know all the veteran salespeople and managers in all the pawnshops in the area. I bought a beat-up Gibson LG-1 from a pawn shop for $75. But that was in 1972. Probably not that great of a deal even then.

Well everybody pretty much confirmed my suspicions on this subject. From what I have seen the few times I have been to pawn shops, they have pretty much no name junk. More importantly, with the invention of the internet, they can quickly find out what the true market value is. I think we all dream of taking advantage of a pawn shop's ignorance and finding a steal on something that they weren't aware of the true value. But that is not likely to happen anymore. I know there can be fair finds but it really doesn't sound like it is worth frequenting them in the hopes of finding any really good deals.
I have bought two things ever from a pawn shop. One was a sound hole pickup and the other was a .22 rifle. The rifle was an impulse buy. It was in excellent shape. After I bought it, I went and looked it up on the web. I only got about $20 or $30 dollars off of what it would have cost new. I am still happy with it. It was still worth what I paid. It is just that I didn't get as good a deal as I thought I was getting. I was disappointed in myself though because I am one of those people that usually researches the heck out of anything before I buy it. I guess it is the lure of thinking that just because it is in a pawn shop, it is a good deal. That won't happen again.

That is some amazing fertile Pawnshop ground you have been plowing over the years...and SMART of you to be a regular and get to know the folks! But I do have to say, that the shops you frequent where you are getting these terrific deals seem very unique to where you live and where your work takes you in your daily travels. There is/are NO Pawnshop or Buy and Sell shops around here in the greater Portland/Vancouver metro area that would offer such nice guitars and such great prices. Every shop around here uses the internet to figure out pricing, and has been doing so for 20 years. Occasionally there are some "good" deals to be had, but no one around here would sell a "03 Taylor Custom Jumbo" for $270,or even remotely nearly that cheaply, or frankly, any of the other guitars/prices on your first list. You live and travel in a pawnshop "banana belt" for wild and crazy good pricing and great instruments...AND, all to your credit and smarts...you put in the time and good faith effort to find them, and befriend and build great relationships with the shops you frequent...but still...I think your situation is pretty unique anymore...but GOOD FOR YOU!!! duff Be A Player...Not A Polisher |

I've run into a couple of scenarios where I've either gotten or seen a good deal:
1. I saw a great deal on a big hammered dulcimer. No one around here plays them but me and like two other people in our town, so they were selling this one at a great price. I already had one just like it, so I didn't get it. 2. I live in bluegrass country; however, I'm a drummer, and many pickers around here don't take kindly to my kind. The music stores here cater to acoustic guitar players, mando players, etc., so sometimes I can score great deals on decent drum gear. A few years ago, I was in the market for some hi-hats, and I found a pair where the top cymbal was black with tarnish. After a quick inspection I saw that they were 14" Zildjian New Beats, and the owner of the store said, "If you want those, I'll sell them to you for $50." Done. I bought those and some cymbal cleaner, and they ended up cleaning up really well. Played them for years, and I sold them last year for like $150-$200 (they sell for $300 new). |
