Ed Claxton Malabar
Ed Claxton Malabar BR/German Spruce. I am the original owner.
1 13/16 at the nut 2 5/16 at the neck join and the saddle. 25.4 scale. The rosette is Ed's special Rosewood/Sycamore/Holly/Pernambuco As far as the date it was made, the closest I can get is 2009-2010. Ed normally ran his building in groups of 3. He let me take them all home and select the one I wanted, which is this one. When I picked it up he asked if he could name the guitar "Eight Belles" after the filly that lost to Big Brown in the Kentucky Derby the year before and was immediately euthanized at 1 furlong past the finish line, with 2 front ankles that had compound fractures. Eight Belles is written on the label which is also signed by Ed. That was 2008 which is honestly how I have dated the guitar. This guitar is special and will be a lifetime guitar for most. It is in minty condition having never left my house, though the strings are pretty old. It has not been played for the last 5 years + due to my Dupuytren's Contracture disease. It is time to let her go to someone else. Price is $SOLD$ with payment. Monterey Bay area pickup is not only welcome but is encouraged. I have sold multiple guitars on the AGF in the past, though it has been awhile. Questions? Beautiful guitar. One does not see these come up for sale very often. My Claxton EM was an older model, 2002-3 and it came to me after 20 years and was absolutely a dream to play. Perfect intonation and action. Ed is an amazing builder who had it all down pat for many years.

Thank you both for the kind words.
Ed makes a superlative guitar and IMHO ranks right up there with the finest in the country. I hate to see it go, but it should before I do. |

For the 3 people who have contacted me, here is the best update I can give you.
First off I would like to thank Brian Truesby, for contacting his friend about this guitar. Craig did respond. Currently i am awaiting final payment for the guitar and Craig has OK'd the transaction and said he is keeping the guitar. Craig has also been in contact with Ed Claxton, who did a final tweak for me and restrung the guitar with new EJ16s, and told me the guitar met his original specs. Craig has had the guitar since last Friday, guaranteed the payment of the balance due and that is all I am waiting for to close out the sale. The best I can do is notify people when it is final. |

I don’t know Tim…..this Craig character sounds kind of sketchy to me…..LOL
I know Craig very well and he is off the charts excited - spoke to him for an hour over the weekend…..I am going to have to make a trip now to see him so I can play this guitar…..I haven’t met Brian, but have been on email chains with him and Craig and I will need to meet him at some point - seems like a super guy with a great sense of humor - he has impeccable taste in guitars and is a helluva player……really don’t know why he hangs around Craig though….lol Congrats on your almost final sale…..now just need some airline dollars so I can visit my good buddy Craig…..and play this Claxton....

Pretty funny blews. haha
Brian is a good player and he sent me a video from the pandemic days with him playing a Claxton. Hope you get back to Colorado to play the guitar. It really needs to be played more, maybe even get Craig to bring it to you. Whenever it happens I hope you enjoy it. You'll have to figure that one out on your own though, it's beyond my pay grade. Listed the guitar for sale, being a private secretary wasn't part of the deal. lol. Good luck |
