Question Outdoor Guitar

Hey Gang,

Just heard this... not bad... interesting design with a "flower" sound port in the back.

Thinking about ordering....

https://www.facebook.com/OutdoorUkul...4470610239489/

Wonder how well the fretts will hold up with bass string made of D'Addario XT coated bass strings with high tension fluorocarbon treble strings.

Specs
https://www.outdoorukulele.com/colle...-carbon-nickel

Like the overall look ... kind of like old gibson slope shoulder pre-war guitars...

Could be fun Thoughts....

My first thought was that it would probably be D'Addario XT Classical strings but then I saw the pinless bridge which requires a ball end.

It looks and sounds like the big brother of a guitalele.

This looks like a stunning deal for a general all-around beater/camper/yard guitar. It looks and sounds good for an inexpensive guitar--doesn't appear to be a just a toy.

As far as Mountain's question, I haven't looked but I thought the XT Classical strings were available with ball ends. If not does that mean that this guitar has steel strings on the bass and nylon as trebles? Humm?

I guess string ties could be used to make any nylon string work with a pinless bridge.

Hi Evan.... the bass strings are coated... I am assuming the coating is a substance that will reduce the wear of the frets? I have the carbon soprano and tenor ukes and they are pretty tough but the low g on the tenor is nylon...

Hummmm... will send them and email and report back... wish there were more videos in the wild.

Mountainmaster;

I've used string ties. Found it easier to just use beads and fishing knots.

Are the frets molded or metal?

Ukulele string vendors (except Daddario, Martin) sell Baritone Uke 20" scale DGBE all fluorocarbon string sets with D @1.04mm, G @0.91mm, B @0.74mm and E @0.62. This formula has a nicely firm tension.

Bytown Instruments lists a 20" scale EADGBE all fluorocarbon set at 1.04mm, 0.91mm, 0.81mm, 0.74mm, 0.66mm, 0.57mm.

For more bass than the Bytown formula, one could start with E @1.17mm (SeaGuar 130#) and À @1.04mm, or possibly E @1.30mm (SeaGuar 150#) and À @1.30mm.

I like the sound of 1.17mm strings, and think 1.30mm (on the to do list) could sound good too.

Cheers.

My gut feeling says the coating won't make any difference regarding fret wear since it is extremely thin. I don't have any scientific proof though. Sorry.

Personally I prefer stainless steel for frets. No need to worry about fret wear and I love that smooth feel when I bend the strings. I just wish this came standard on all guitars.

I am certain the frets are molded like on the Outdoor Uke.

I really like my Uke for what it is. My wife's solid top Kala sounds better, but I wouldn't take the Kala camping or leave it in my car.

Is this guitar tuned at an E?

This guitar with a pickup might be cool.

I agree.. I really enjoy my carbon soprano and tenor and have k&k dual pickup and strap buttons on both. They are my most fun and communal instruments I own. Almost care free and given the cost .... you just focus on playing and sharing music.

GREAT fun!!! Hope to hear back soon from OU and report back to group.

Carbon Investigator Reporter Fixedgear 10-7 Good buddy...signing out... ;-)

Carbon Investigator;

At the price, this is almost a must have. Thanks for the discovery. I look forward to future reports.

No response to my email other then tuned to E. Must be in lock down there. I found this in the uke forum:

The Outdoor Guitar™ frets are made with enhanced carbon fiber polycarbonate for increased wear resistance. Like traditional frets, they will eventually show signs of wear. The wear rate is dependent on the amount of play and playing style. We will eventually offer a replacement bolt-on neck.

Surprised they did not use strings from a bass uke made out of Nyltech. Perhaps not a real issue... I have found carbon fiber polycarbonate really tough on my ukes and see no wear after two years...

Also no word on whether they will install a guitar k&k pickup (3 sensors) or their two sensor uke pickup. Given the small body.. would imagine two senor would work fine just like on my tenor carbon OU.

If you add the pickup and a neck strap button.. the price starts to really climb... 345 + 5 + 95........$445...getting close to a price I start to worry about care :-) but could still be fun with a bunch of stickers on and just play with friends. That is the weird thing about carbon fiber guitars.... they are really tough but given the price point to afraid to test claims in the wild due to price point...hahahah. So they stay safe in my house but out or in very controlled environments... rare I take my McPherson to the beach...more of hotel room queen

May wait for more reports from the field from early adopters!!!
