Finger braces glued to back, and one pair of sides laminated together. I'll do the other pair tomorrow, then profile and trim, and shape the back braces.
It's amazing how much stiffer laminated sides are. I'm looking forward to having the rim all glued together to see how stiff it is.

Rough profiling of the back braces is done. One side is profiled, the other almost done. It looks as though the blocks, sides and back will fit together, but we'll see when we get to that.
I glued on a patch of tzalam on the inside of the back where I had thinned the plate way too much. It's not super pretty, but at least it means the guitar won't break in that spot.

Back bracing is all done. I've deflection tested the top so I can compare this build with any builds I do later.
I messed up the headstock on the one-piece Spanish cedar neck, so I beheaded the neck and glued a new headstock on with a scarf joint, and some reinforcement to make a bump under the nut. I didn't like how the inlays on the fingerboard had turned out, and I needed to thickness the fingerboard anyway, so I sanded them off. Once that was done, I slotted the fingerboard and did a single inlay at the 12th fret using offcuts from the inner sides. I damaged the edge of the fingerboard while doing the inlay (it took 3 attempts to get an inlay I was happy with), so I'll need to plane that down and glue some binding on. Today I cut channels into the neck for the truss rod and two carbon fiber rods. What's the preferred way to attach those so they don't rattle? I've seen various things like caulking, epoxy, super glue or Titebond. I expect the truss rod itself should be free to move along its length, so that won't be epoxied.

Rog,
Building can be like a dance at times, one step forward, two steps back. Hang in there |

Update: Additional inlays are in, for better or worse. They're not great, and the alignment isn't perfect, but they're better than the first batch I made, so there's progress. I also bound the fingerboard. Later I will radius it and call it done until fretting. I'm making a purposefully wide neck (2" at the nut) to see how I like it. I tend to like wider nuts in general (1 13/16 or 1 7/8) and play the classical guitar, so I've been curious about a steel string with a classical-ish wide fingerboard. Update #2: I realized later my first inlay was on fret 9, instead of 12 as intended. D'oh. So I made a few more for frets 5, 12 and 17. Except my 5th fret inlay is actually at the 4th fret. Double d'oh. So now I feel like a complete idiot. I'll probably leave it as is as a curiosity, and only work on the guitar when I've had enough sleep.

What seems sooo obvious after the fact is not easily noticed when you are in a zone while working.
I once inlayed two diamonds on the 11th fret. Those were much easier to cut out and fill on a Ebony fret board than what you have here. Stuff happens ! Travis |

Does anyone know where to get 1/10" maple (possibly other) bridge plate wood?
Thanks! |

CF rods and truss rods are in place. I'll glue a maple spine over the truss rod for extra support, then rough out the heel and glue the fretboard on.
