Brandi Carlile doing one of my favorite Crosby stills and Nash songs
One of the first songs I learned to play and sing
I think Brandi and friends do a good job of it https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=OodNAJCOaos

Great job on a great Stephen Stills song that I've loved and played since it came out. I have to believe Stephen was smiling?

I give them props for doing it so in tune. The male high vocals are impressive. But for me the performance is a bit sterile.
There's a bit more interest in this performance for me. Not just musically but visually as well. There's a flippancy to Nash that makes it fun IMO. He does what he does to get that signature high part. In fairness it's one of those songs that does rely on it's evenness and vocals lining up in favor of a oneness of character. Stills guitar work has a little more happening than Brandi's guitar player, though he is solid. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lb6hUFlzM7Q |

Quote:
When I used to perform that song in a trio back in college (I handled the middle Crosby part), part of what made the song interesting is not so much being "dead-on", but each part having its own character. The blend was what made it cool.

Often covers will seem sterile. A lot of it has to do with the fact that it is a cover and it’s very rare when any vocalists can reproduce the individuality of a vocal. I thought it was nicely done.
I would like to add I can’t take much of Howard Stern....had to say that.

Sorry, didn't really care for the Brandi rendition. I prefer this cover, by SYA, even though there's maybe a little Dutch accent coming through.

And then there’s a version posted a while ago in Show & Tell by our very own “Glennwillow” who performs all harmonies. Just wonderful!
