Default Cheap 214 ideas?

Hi all,

So I stupidly traded my Taylor 214 (for a Telecaster) but now need something similar for recording.

My acoustic journey is very limited. Prior to the Taylor I had a Yamaha APX (didn't sound like what I think of an acoustic although it was nice to play) and I have also had a budget Vintage v100 (quite nice for the money) and a Taylor Big Baby (sounded a bit thin).

I'm looking for something which can sound like the 214 - plenty of bass but plenty of top end, in something not too large for under £400/$400. If I could stretch the budget, I'd just get a 214!

Any ideas what will fit the bill?

I currently own a 214ce and I would recommend an Eastman with that budget. To get a comparable (if not better, in my opinion) tonal range and volume to the 214ce, Iíd say the ac122ce would be the best bet if you could find one used. You could also get a e1om used but these are a smaller body and will therefore typically have a smaller sound. If youíre unable to find these within your budget, I hear the PCH models are quite good for the money. Iíd recommend a pch1-gace for the most comparable tone to your Taylor in the pch line. With a $400 budget, you will probably hear a lot of recommendations for Yamaha, Eastman, and Alvarez. Iíve played and owned all and theyíre all good, but the Eastmans are a bit better, especially once you get into their all solid lines like suggested above. Good luck!

Funnily enough, I've found a really cheap ($150/£150) PCH1 GACE on Facebook marketplace but it looks Mahogany...I wonder if it would be bright enough?

The E1s look slightly out of my price range.

They make them in multiple top finishes including a stained spruce top which I think looks like mahogany stain, and a natural spruce top. I donít believe they make them in mahogany top but I may be wrong.

I rented a 114ce when I was out of town and it was pretty impressive. I also think the academy Taylorís have impressive tone, albeit with pretty rustic build.

I played a pch1 last year and it was nice for the money. Won’t be as nice as a 214, has a satin finish and feels a little cheap in comparison (I used to own a 214ce). But the one I played sounded great.

I agree itís not the same level of quality, but with a budget of 1/3 of the price of a 214, it really is hard to get any closer than that in my opinion.

Yes, you are right. And for $150, that would be a great buy.
