EV Evolve 30M vs 50M
Right now, I am all in on the EV Evolve M series thing. I bought two 30Ms, and then I was worried about outdoor gigs, so I bought two 50Ms.
After putting both through testing, I can make the following points. 1) Two 30Ms and one 50M are roughly equivalent in terms of the size of a space you can cover. 2) Both can handle low volumes equally well. It isn’t until you start pushing or trying to cover a larger area that it matters. 3) The 50M isn’t a heck of a lot bigger than the 30M, either packed or set up. It might make a difference if you have a tiny car (as I do), but it isn’t as big a difference as you might think. 4) The 50M is significantly more expensive, especially with the deals on returns on 30Ms at ProAudioStar.com. Approximately 2k vs 1k. 5) The connecting of two mixers together with a single ethernet cable is way cool! It works exactly as advertised. The master mixer settings are slaved to each other, and you can call up patches together that preset them both. 6) Two 30Ms work well in stereo mode with one as a mixer and the other as a slave, but that is not nearly as cool as one composite mixer with double the channels controlled from a single phone or tablet. 7) The ethernet cable connection between two 50Ms is digital. There is no need for the expensive cables that you might choose for an analog ethernet cable four channel snake. It just regular cat5 or cat6 cable. Just curious, can you tell me how to stream YouTube music through the bluetooth on the EV30m?
I have YouTube premium (commercial free) and I'd like to stream music during breaks. I have an iPhone 12. I was messing with it the other day but didn't get it to work for streaming tunes. |

It steams music like any Bluetooth speaker. Once it is paired you should be able to select it in the usual way: Downward swipe the top right corner, then click on the white round icon with the circles and triangle at the bottom. That should show your options. I have found all sorts of background music in different genres on YouTube. Some last for hours. You can download them with the pro account to be safe, then delete the download when you are done. |

Only thing I would add is that the 50m sub may not be significantly larger, but it's nearly another ten pounds. So 35 pounds v. almost 45. Thirty-five pounds is the most I can safely manage lugging up and down my two flights of stairs, especially given the non-ergonomic handle setup. It won't challenge others of course. |

The Bose Racetrack design really is very cool in how it lets you get so sub low frequencies and yet put it in a narrow package that lets you carry it with the weight close to your body. There is no question that the Bose sub is more ergonomic for transport. On the other hand, I spend a good amount of time every day exercising, and I don’t mind the occasional chance to make use of that strength I spend so much time cultivating. Also, that solid square off heavy design makes for a heck of a base for the column. What I really like is that the footprint on stage of either the 30M or the 50M takes up so much less space than the three legs of a speaker stand holding up something like a Bose S1 or my Elite Acoustics D6-58. I played in a duo for a couple of years, and while I’m doing a single now, I expect to eventually run into just the right partner and go back to doing the duo thing. At that point, I will need the extra channels of the 30M/50M over the two of the Bose columns. I had a Bose T1 mixer with my column, and while it was very good, I much prefer the lack of clutter mixing from the phone app. |

The thing is, that in many ways there is very little difference between the 50M and 30M, and everywhere that the 30M works, so will the 50M. It really doesn’t take up a whole lot more space packed or set up. If I was going to get just one, it would be the 50M.
None the less, I am going to use the 30M at least 90% of the time just because it is more compact and just as good until the space gets large. It fits better with other gear in my 2009 Mini Cooper Clubman. I think that the ideal setup is one 30M, and a pair of 50Ms for those times when you need more power and channels. That and a couple of monitor speakers so that you can use the 50M pair in a front of house configuration. I will use my pair of Bose S1 Pros for this. What I was looking for was as simple a setup as possible that could take me all the way from a solo or duo coffee shop scenario all the way up to doing an acoustic group in a typical outdoor stage where you have a small field for folding chairs and food trucks. I believe I have found this system. |

I am grandfathered in to the initial monthly rate from when YouTube Music was Google Play. Something like $7 a month. I much prefer YouTube Music to Apple Music or Spotify. What I like is that I can play major releases like the other services, but I can also play the music from YouTube videos, and blend them all into the same playlists. I love being able to watch videos without ads, and download what I am currently listening to without going through monthly megabytes. |

I picked up a lightening to stereo RCA cable to plug my iPhone directly into the Evolve in case I have problems with Bluetooth, or as an alternative/backup.

Because of the weight the EV50 wasn't a choice. I went with one EV30 and when the larger gigs arrive I line out to a QSC K8.2 which at 127dB is louder than the EV30. Even the QSC CP8 at $480 is great for an Aux speaker. CP8 at 124 dB is as loud as the EV30. I see no reason to spend $1,400 for a second EV30 unless you are a DJ and want that look.

Continuing to enjoy my 50M--It has worked very well in all of my situations. Some of the latest--I returned to this venue named "The Barn". The last time I played I put the Evolve a little out front and to the side. The most recent time out I decided to try putting it behind me and it worked like a charm! It's a fairly large venue, and while I didn't play real loud I had adequate coverage. I could hear myself much better, and with the hollow stage my "monitoring" sounded fantastic! Here's a pic--
I had a repeat performance at a local winery that is very "rustic"--They have a very low EZ-UP, so I have to sit while playing (I typically stand). My first time there I ended up having to put the Evolve out front and outside of the EZ-UP, which was fine. But...I decided this was a good opportunity to pick up the short pole, and I'm glad I did, as I was able to put the Evolve right next to me yesterday. I could hear myself really well, and it sounded better to me while sitting--I assume since it the column and sub are close together and withing earshot. Not surprisingly, the throw wasn't quite as good, but it was adequate. My review of the short pole--it's short! Here's a pic of the first time (sorry the Evolve is out of the shot, but it's in front of the EZ-UP and to my left side)--photo complete with a peacock photo bomb! And yesterday's setup with the short pole--I could hear myself much better so it was more inspiring-- |

The commercial free feature of YouTube premium is the bomb.com Just got a new apartment in Pittsburgh and it's on the second floor. So, that is a downside for the 30M. Good exercise though. Aside from the great sound and build quality, The simple set up and minimalist design are among the reasons I accept the weight and weird carry handle on the sub. Great PA system. I still haven't had a chance to use it outside. I've been hanging on to my K8 until I can use the 30M outdoors. I want to see how it does. If it handles it well, I may sell the K8.2. |
