Default NGD- SCGC Custom OM Grand

In 2014 I fell in love with a Santa Cruz OM Grand. The 1 3/4" was larger than necks I had played on for decades but I figured I'd get used to it. Most things were fine but barre chords in a few of my songs became painful. As a working singer-songwriter I had to find a better solution and thus began a multi-year journey of guitar necks and woods. Discovered some great guitars along the way but with each one I still looked longingly over at my 2014 OM Grand and found sonic relief whenever I played it. I even toured the Santa Cruz factory and asked Richard if he could just replace the neck on my guitar. With a twinkle in his eye he said it was possible but he'd rather just build me a new guitar.

In February of this year I decided to stop buying guitars with more playable neck in the hopes that I would love one as much as my OM Grand and just order an OM Grand with a custom neck. It arrived this week. I was a little fearful it would not be as magical as my older OMG but quickly learned that though its magic is different it is just as captivating.

The neck is modified rounded and very similar to a Guild D40 I've had since 1975 and an Alvarez Yairi WY-1 that I toured with for over 15 years. Before that I toured with an Ovation Legend. All are slimmer necks that I had gotten used to. This custom is approximate .84" at 1st fret, .882" at the 5th fret and .91" at the 9th fret. Lindsay at Maple Street Guitars in Atlanta spec-ed it out for me.

1 11/16" nut. Sitka top/Indian Rosewood Back & Sides. Koa binding for the body, fingerboard, and headstock. 2 3/16' bridge spacing. Abalone Rosette and SCGC logo.Gold Gotoh 510 minis.

Congratulations, that's a real beauty there! I love my SCGC OMs, and I can only imagine the OMGs are just "the same, but more of it!"

Enjoy in good health, and if you're inclined, we'd love to hear some sound clips of it!

Nice guitar! I find that SCGC guitars have a wide string spacing relative to the nut width, if that makes sense. They play ‘wide’. My 1 11/16 DPW had the same actual string spacing at the nut as many 1.75 nut width guitars I had played.

P.S. - I hope you are still enjoying the Goodall!

Yes, but I am about to put the Concert Jumbo up for sale when I have some time. It's a wonderful instrument, a true work of art, and the neck works for me but somehow my ear and heart still found itself longing for my OM Grand. So as amazing as that Goodall is I haven't bonded with it in the past year.

I might even part with the Collings OM2HT at some point though I have found it to be a great songwriting partner. Very different voice than the Goodall or the OMGs so I will hang on to it for awhile.

Wow, that is beautiful and I'd love those exact specifications myself.

That’s a killer guitar. I’ve had my custom SCGC OM Grand for 3 years and consider it to be one of the best guitars I’ve played. I really like the appointments you’ve chosen and I’m sure the tone is rewarding. Good choice! Enjoy.

That’s a beautiful guitar.

And it’s even better when a custom order delivers the hoped-for mojo. So double congrats!!

TBH the appointment choices were heavily influenced by the Goodalls I have owned. Koa binding, abalone rosette, and Gotoh 510s. They are beautiful on this guitar. On Goodalls they are stunning.

Really nice guitar. Koa binding is a nice touch... every guitar they use it on looks terrific.

Enjoy!

Really gorgeous! Love the fretboard binding! I’d love one of those identical - except with a 1-13/16” neck!
