I see 50/50 on recommendations on the string to tie where. Some claim the strings are made with the looser windings so it's easier to fit thru the bridge. I read a string manufacturer said it was just the natural result of the string winding process.

However I think the loose winding are better installed on the tuning pegs.

That may be, but I wouldn't follow that advice. You'll have a much stronger tie at the bridge if you use the stiff, wounded side of the string. Even though it's more of a pain to do.
