Default Rocky Mountain Raga - Robbie Basho

Hey,

My name is Marc and I am new in the Forum.
I am impressed by variety of talent this Forum offers.

2 years ago i listened to Daniel Bachmanns music and was touched by his style of using the acoustic guitar. American primitivism hit me like a train and carried me into a new world of music. In this period i discovered the work of Robbie Basho which is by far the Most interesting artwork i have ever listened to.

It still suprises me that he hasn't earned more Reputation over the years. His music is a timeless beauty and in my opinion very very important.

Because of him i decided 3 month ago to purchase a 12 string.
From that point on i was trying to get at least a glimpse of what he was doing and feeling 40 years ago.

This is my Rocky Mountain Raga Cover:

https://youtu.be/EynPptevZkk

It is a work in progress and as i said, First time i touched a 12 string was 3 month ago. I am still a beginner.

I hope we will find more people who like robbie bashos music..
He well deserves it. Even if he's long gone to a hopefully better Place.

All the best

Marc

Good to hear folks are inspired by, and are playing in this tradition.

Nothing to apologize for in your playing. Your recording has more reverb/echo than I would use. I'm not sure if it's your recording space or if it was added as an effect--but that's a matter of taste, and tastes differ.

I really appreciate your kind words. Thank you!

In fact there is not a single effect added. I just moved into a bigger Appartement and the echo sounds are there because the room is empty. In real the sound is way better. This Martin sounds really really good. Next time i'll record it more studio like.

All the best

Marc

As FrankHudson rightfully said, tastes differ. He is right that it may be just a little too much room reverb... However, personally, I like to hear the 'sound of the room', so to speak... So please don't make it TOO studio-like next time. Maybe your apartment will give just the right ambience as you fill it up with stuff and, eh, guitars....
Once again; vey nice playing!

Thank you !
Sometimes i listen to my recordings first and then put on Robbies version..

And every single time i just smile. I smile because then again I realize how amazing this man was.

For the people who don't know him and his music very good:

I uploaded a live version of him playing in the sinclair auditorium :
https://youtu.be/BY7_NGHJJ5Q

and here is one from Bonn (Germany) in the 1980s:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLRVaC0zvzs

You can have different opinion on his Vocal performance.. i really like it.
But i can understand if some of you have a different taste.

But you gotta love his guitar playing. It's just mesmerizing..

All the best

Marc

This sounds great! I don't mind the reverb of the room at all. Basho is one of my favorites.

Welcome to the Forum. If you have truly been playing only 3 months (which I find very hard to believe) then you have an innate talent for playing guitar. May your inner musician take you far.

Thank you. Very kind.
I started with a 6 string a couple years ago.
So don't get me wrong, it's just the 12-string i purchased 4 month ago. I definitely touched a guitar before !

But playing the 12 is very different.
Most of Bashos pieces are very difficult to unearth.
His precision is mindblowing.
You will realize it while trying to cover one of his Songs.
There is live footage of him playing the 12.
Check it out and take a look at his right Hand.

To achieve his level of precision you have to sacrifice a lifetime playing this Instrument. I don't know if i ever get close to it, but in the end i got all his records to Listen to again and again.

Thank you again.

Marc
