Default Have to share... NGD, and the mix of daunting and excitement

First.... without further adieu:

My new Gibson Les Paul 60's, Iced Tea finish with the most stunning flame I've seen!

I've been a long time acoustic player, on and off. I've owned electrics but I've never really dabbled long with them. I decided I needed to get the one I've always dreamed of, and made it a reality. My love for LP goes back to many years ago in high school when the best guitarist I knew had a LP custom that he could make sing effortlessly. Thank you, Russell.

Being a born again electric player... I realized how little I actually know about anything. Of course I needed an amp, too. Solid state, modeling, tube/valve? I used to have an original Spider when it was first launched but I wanted something I could chase the classic LP growl with and do it justice. With the help of folks here and other forums I learned a lot and wound up with a Marshall DSL40.

And then... the playing. I realize I've never learned how to play lead anything, how to solo, how to do pinch harmonics, play speed picking cleanly, etc. I feel like I'm starting again from square one, which is both exciting and daunting. It's one thing to finger style melodies I like and have learned on my acoustic, but this is a new beast.

I want to start again with actually filling gaps on music theory so I can break past the barriers I've always had with guitar playing. I hope to have a ton of fun in the process!

Very unusual flaming - never seen anything quite like it in a maple top (seen a couple Taylor Custom solids with similar crotch walnut tops - I own one) - and the LP/Marshall combination has spawned many a classic rock tone over the last half-century; good idea to get some formal music-theory study under your belt, BTW - opens up a broader stylistic spectrum than simple CAGED/pattern-based playing...

Use it well, often, and LOUD...

Gosh that's a beautiful guitar - and a very nice Gibson at that. Should sound good through just about anything. I am sure you will get some good suggestions.

First and foremost, that is one seriously handsome LesPaul Standard. Wow.

Now for the daunting stuff…..Relax, the internet is your friend. You will find on this new journey every combination of lessons, explanations, diagrams about anything you ever wanted to explore on a fretboard. At your pace, explained and taught the way you comprehend things. You search and find what works for YOU.

No worries ahead, you’ll see. Enjoy your beautiful guitar.

I have always loved the iced tea finish on the Gibson Les Paul and yours, with that incredible flaming, is absolutely gorgeous! Congratulations and good for you!

You are going to have some serious fun! And that Marshall amp is something very cool, as well!

I'm excited for you!

One of my favorite finishes! Well done. Don’t be overwhelmed. There’s always something new to learn. In life, and music. An old friend would often encourage me when I felt overwhelmed musically speaking (but it applied to life as well). He’d say, “how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.”

I’ve never forgotten that. You have great gear. Don’t allow the process to overwhelm you (easier said then down, I know). Have fun. Enjoy the process.

Most importantly, play in good health. Congrats on a great new addition.

that is a beauty.

my only other offering as advice and encouragement is to just enjoy the ride

there's a lot of things that will run through your head on what you should be doing, and wind up worrying that you're missing something important.

that just leads one down rabbit holes.

find one or two things you want or feel you need to brush up on and stay focused on those.

as you go down those roads other things will just fall in line. The "ah ha!" moments will come your way.

That’s just gorgeous! Main thing is have fun. Don’t make electric guitar a chore by overwhelming yourself with all these techniques you think you have to master. Pick one technique and stick to it until you feel the progress or if it frustrates you, move to another technique. But first and foremost, have fun.

Beautiful. You’re gonna have a great time with that. And remember that no matter how expensive or cheap, no matter how beautiful or ugly, a guitar is still just a guitar in the end. All those notes you played on your acoustic are in the same place on your beautiful LP. They just sound different…
