Odd Deer Tracks, ideas?
Been seeing these lately around the lake next door...
Always mixed in with deer tracks. But the steps seem to take no real rhyme or reason... Thanks... [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] |

If no one knows on this forum, perhaps there is a wildlife group/agency in your area that you can send the photos to for identification.

My best guess would be a deer with a deformed foot. Or maybe a deer with a limp.

Yep, maybe the hoof is split, or has been injured.
I have a million deer on my 30 acres and have never seen that. Yes. A million. This is deer country..... |

Oof. Have you ever been hit by deer? We once had one jump into the side of our car. It had bad timing.

We had one hit the very back of our stock trailer. If it had just a little bit of patience to let the rest of that train go by....

They're not the only creature to have faulty decision making capabilities though. How many squirrels have run under your vehicle or birds fly right into your grill? Recently I saw a redtail hawk narrowly miss a car's windshield. That would have been really messy.

Fern Ridge Reservoir near Eugene, Oregon.
That has been our best guess too. I will try to get a photo with more prints as to show walking. |

If you watch deer closely you will notice that they stand still allot. They move and stand then slowly take a step or two and stand again. When they stand they often move their legs and feet a little. You hardly notice it as a person looks at the whole deer. I'm more inclined to think the deer picked that particular hoof up a bit and set it back down almost in the same place. Say the right side of the hoof was set back down in the mark or track that was left by the left side of the hoof. Thus three hoof marks.

They are perfectly smart for their lives in the woods. Humans on the other hand....
