Default "A Kiss In The Night"

Couple of recordings I did of my tune "A Kiss In The Night".

Different guitar and mikes used on each.

Planning to add one of them to my youtube channel. Any preferences?

Really beautiful song and great playing Derek. Liked them both but preferred the first.

Nice!
I don't think you could go wrong with either one, but I actually preferred the second, slightly shorter version. It had a softer, rounder tone to my ears, which seemed to suit the (tender) melody better.
Very subtle though, and probably splitting hairs, but I did compare both a few times, so that made me more certain about my preference.

Both are outstanding but I like the slightly warmer tone of the second one which I think is fitting for the title of the song.

Thanks for the feedback. Everyone's playback systems and ears are different.
I probably will go with the first one.

Hi Derek,
Last night I listened on my recording/playback system at home (which is somewhat ‘clinical’). The second recording seemed to have a more complex lower register that I liked and it seemed smoother overall. Today I listened in my car, and preferred the second recording again. The stereo image on the first one did not seem as consistent as the second recording, and while the first one had more high end I didn’t think it was as pleasant.

I’d appreciate if you could let me know the guitar and mics used on each recording. I’d like to relate what I thought I heard to the gear.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Chuck. First one was a Simon Fay OM Cocobolo/Carpathian recorded with a pair of Gefell M300 (possible M295) mikes

Number two was a Paul Woolson LG Cocobolo/Cedar Lutz Spruce double top recorded with a pair of KM 84 clone miked.

Both the guitar and mikes of number two are softer sounding. Of course there are a several other variables of the recording process.

Generally I prefer clarity which is why I somewhat prefer the first recording, but it depends on the playback system. Number one could be a little too bright on some playback systems.

Another example of how the Woolson can record:

Interesting hearing these recordings of the same guitars. I'm assuming this Woolson recording was with a different mic than the other Woolson recording, or am I mistaken?

Yes, different mikes - this one recorded with my Gefell M295s.

Thanks to those who gave feedback. Decided to use my original recording from my CD. The sound is sort of a combination of the the prior two recordings.

After listening to all these various recordings of A Kiss In The Night I was searching through the AGF for your work and noticed the Simon Fay guitar was his 'road trip' guitar. I played that guitar at one of our Twin Cities AGF Gatherings many years ago.

Since I'm trying to relate my interpretation of all these recordings, with various combinations of guitars and mics, I'd appreciate if you could share the guitar and recording setup that was used on the album containing this song.

Thanks again for all your sharing of songs, tabs, and recording technique.
