Default Sliding up to a Melody Note Simultaneously Thumb Hitting Beat

Clunky title, hopefully the pic will make my question clearer:

That slide up to the F# in the first bar of the illustration for exercise 2! It confounds me. I’ve tried listening to the video but it’s hard to hear exactly when the F# and the open D coincide. If you look at the first bar of the main section there’s a similar two note phrase but it starts with a pinch on the beat and finishes on the “and.” Much easier for me than starting to slide on the “and” and finishing on the beat with the thumb timed in simultaneously. Any help is greatly appreciated. Also thanks to reeve21 for posting this lesson in the Mississippi John Hurt appreciation thread.

He demonstrates the first rhythm from 1:40.
(You can slow down the youtube if you need to.)

Thanks. I slowed it down and that helped some. I think I’m overthinking it a bit. It’s really easy to pinch to a slide. Sliding up and then hitting the bass with the thumb is much more “felt” if that makes sense.

In the video it looks to me as though he is pinching the open D with the F then sliding to the F# as he is in the 3rd measure, but play it F, the F#/D without doing the slide and see if that helps. You can throw the slide in later when your muscle memory is fortified completely.
