Default If your favorite strings halved their price...

If your favorite stringmaker cut their price in half...

...would you change them more often, so you'd never have to hear them getting dull?

...or would you just keep changing them as you do today and pocket the savings?

Mostly the hold up for me is laziness, not cost.

I'll take that as a vote for "pocket the savings," then, even if it is an incidental result.

Kind of like raisin' kids:

I change 'em when they need changin'.

I'd pocket the difference, but I'd just spend it on somethin' else.

In all seriousness I would probably not change strings much more often. That said, I might be tempted to buy a few more sets to have as standby - I usually get the 3 for 2 sets that Elixir do every now and then. Just now because of a lack of gigs and rehearsals I still have two 3-packs of acoustic and one of electric strings waiting to be used...

It might tempt me to try new brands and types of string. Thomastik were an example of strings I wouldn’t normally experiment with because of cost etc. I was recommended them by a friend so tried them anyway. Changed them again after a week, not for me... so if cost is less of an issue then it’s worth trying something new.

Once upon a time, I'd change 'em monthly - because I enjoy changing strings, then every two months, then prices of American imports went up a lot so I stretched to three months with some exceptions.

In this time of plague most of my guitars don't get to see daylight, so ...meh!

I've got two newish Eastmans - an E20-P and an E40-00 which are fascinating me so I'm going to change them both today, if I can raise the workshop above freezing.

I only use Thomastik strings on my guitars which are very pricey here in the Uk. I get mine from Germany but there are still £55 for 4 sets. I’ve spent over £120 on strings this month but I do find they last a long time (3 months) and since I primarily fingerpick I will not compromise on tone. The strings give a fullness, warmth and clarity that is so unique. I’ve tried every maker out there I think but I always come back to Thomastik. I’d probably change them after 2 months if they were cheaper but I like a played in string. I hate that new string brashness where the notes clatter about without definition.

I could have written this. Thomastik Plectrum 13s for me (although I struggle to distinguish Plectrums from Spectrums). I like them best after 2 or 3 weeks...for the next several months. Hate new strings. This being a largely US forum, Thomastik don't get much PR since they're twice the price in the US. But, in answer to the OP, if the price of Thomastik halved, my advice to the US folks would be to give 'em a try.

I started buying multiple sets of strings back in the 70's. Today it's just a way of life. I bet if I really dug. I could find between 20-30 sets of acoustic strings. Here at the house. May be as many 10-46 electric strings. And at least 4 or 5 9-42's. 3 0r 4 sets of bass strings. Both flats and round wound. I saw two sets of RS80 mandolin strings as well. I buy when they go on sale. Haven't had the " Oh crap I broke a string. I need to go to the store" in a really long time.

I only buy them when they’re on sale at 2 for 1 or even 3 for 1.

I change my strings only at the precise time they need changing and spend the savings on women and wine.

I'd keep the same schedule, but I'd have a bigger pile of strings in my cabinet.

In relative terms, Martin guitar strings are about half the price they were in the 1930s. However, their guitars are 4 to 6 times more expensive for the same models!!! (now that is annoying!)

Ive never held off changing strings because of a couple dollars.....so I wouldn't change them more frequently for a few dollars.
