Amp stand?
So I occasionally play my acoustic guitar in an '80's rock band, only for a handful of songs. I run my acoustic through a dedicated acoustic amp (an AER), and not through a PA. I place the amp on the floor. As you may know, AER's are great amps, but they are small and the speaker therefore is low to the ground.
Sometimes the sound gets a little bassie. Would it help to get the amp off the ground by using an amp stand or something? I've never used a stand before and am not sure why I would use one, except for maybe this situation. Ideas? |

I would think it would help a great deal in you hearing the amp, also, being off the floor does usually help un-couple the bass a bit.
Is the audience also only hearing the AER? (you mentioned no PA). If so, getting it up will also help it project past the front-row of the audience. Later Rob |

A foam sheet found in craft sections of department stores can aid in uncoupling bass from the floor:

I use one of these - lifts the amp about 20" off the floor, tiltable, folds up for transport. It says 'Athletic' on the badge.

did you try to put it on a robust mic stand?

A chair can work fine, if you can be sure you have one available.

To alleviate floor proximity effects, you want the amp at least 3 feet off the floor. |

Pipe Wrap!
I carry a short length of the type of tubular insulation that is wrapped around water pipes to keep them from freezing. Place it under the front of my amp (Roland Micro Cube) to angle it up away from the floor, when playing in the uke band. It stops the sound being lost into the floor, and weighs next to nothing.......

Thanks all. I will try some kind of stand and see how that works. Yes, Cuki, it's a Compact 60, a great sounding little amp.

I'm old school so favor the adjustable polystyrene amp stands known as 'milk crates' but would suggest buying a couple rather than the traditional method of stealing them! (yes, I have a foldable amp stand as well, but how much mojo doe that have!)

Anyone who uses a combo amp in a band situation should get their amp off the floor and angled so they can hear it, too. Otherwise, it ends up being too loud for the mix, and blasting the audience members in front.
I've got this one: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/acces...back-amp-stand Big enough to hold a 2x12 amp.

For my Fender Acoustic 100 and when I was gigging with my Telecaster and a Mustang III, I use one of these. Cheap, portable and does a good job of angling the amp where I can hear it while projecting into the room better. I wouldn't use it for a 2 x 12 amp, but for a small amp under 30 lbs it works great.
