Default Quilted Maple / EI Rosewood Concert Model - Michael Kennedy Guitars

With the La Conner Guitar Festival just a couple of weeks away, I thought I'd give you all a preview of one of the guitars I'll be bringing with me and that is now officially up for grabs. This one started 4 or 5 years ago when I found an incredible board of quilted maple online and proceeded to stare at it every few months before finally deciding to pull the trigger and buy it after a couple of years. After re-sawing and letting it sit for a bit, I was super excited to finally get to use it for a build (and extra excited to still have two more sets lying in wait...).

First thing up is bending/laminating the sides. In this case the inner laminations are yellow cedar...

For the back I decided to go with a three-piece design with rosewood in the middle. I had built a similar-ish guitar 12 or so years ago and loved how classy the maple/rosewood looked together...

Three-piece backs also allow for some interesting purfling work to frame the center section. In this case the purfling lines are also quilted maple and rosewood...

I just can't get enough of that figure!

Since I'm building this one for shows, I had to try a little extra on the rosette...

And some of that tricky purfling...

Nothing super intricate but I'm really happy with how this end-graft is looking...

With a similar theme on the headstock and bridge...

A bit of a whirlwind through the build process but I'll save the final photos for another post -- thanks for looking!

I have a feeling it won't make it that far but I'll still make sure to bring some extra pretty stuff for you all!

It's a great weekend and always one of my favorite shows -- and, yup, I think this one is worth making the trip to try out!

Thanks so much

Here are some shots of the finished guitar; I'm really ecstatic with how this one turned out!

As I mentioned, this one is going to the La Conner Festival in a couple of weeks but please get in touch with any questions or if you want to stake your claim beforehand!

I saw this earlier as well, and it's a beauty. I made last minute arrangements last week to attend La Conner, and I look forward to meeting you and this guitar while there.

If this was the only guitar at La Conner it would still be worth the trip. Hope to make it up there if the old knees hold out.

Mike, that is one of the most beautiful guitars i have seen in my life!!!! i love quilt maple, but that is SPECTACULAR!!!!STUNNING!!!!
Maple is my favorite wood, but that guitar is almost beyond words. Even a picture of that guitar hanging in a guitar room would make a statement

Thanks so much -- and thankfully for me (and whoever ends up it), it sounds as good as it looks!
