Default Rockwool 80 vs 60

Hi All,

I'm building some bass traps (for the corners up by the ceiling). I'm also going to build a couple more 4 ft x 2ft x 4 in panels for the walls.

Is Rockwool 80 the best material for this application, or would Rockwool 60 work?

Bill If I am remembering correctly (always questionable) I believe 80 has a bit better low end attenuation .. But you might try to get on the Rockwool website and see if that have some frequency related charts to confirm

Thanks Kev, sometimes just need to know where to ask...

From their site 'Rockwool 80 is often recommended as the best mineral wool for sound panels because of its superior sound absorption capabilities, particularly at lower frequencies.'

I went with Rockboard 80 for my gobo panels (I don't have separate bass traps elsewhere) because their attenuate better at the low frequencies than Rockboard 60. So, for bass traps I'd use the 80.

However, for wall panels and gobos (assuming they will be 4" thick), I'd do it a bit differently if I did it again; I'd use 2" of Rockboad 60 (as the first surface the sound enters) and 2" of Rockboard 80 for the deeper material. The reason I'd use the 60 for the first surface the sound enters is because the 60 is less dense and doesn't reflect the high frequencies that the denser 80 might.
