John asked me to install a K&K Pure Mini pickup in the guitar, and also include a sound port with a slider than can be opened and closed. We have both found that with the port closed, the guitar responds great to strumming and rhythm, but for fingerstyle, it sounds better open. That's the whole idea. This sound port also presents some interesting options for recording with microphones, which is something John plans on doing. Wouldn't it be fun to get a sound clip on this thread (hint, hint!)? Here's a detail shot of the bevel.

John decided to have a custom Ameritage case made for the Windhorse. I liked the way he wanted it appointed with the interior and exterior fabrics and colors, so I had two identical cases made. The other one goes with a Consort I'm currently building, and will have on display at "the Healdsburg" in August.

Beautiful work, Steve!
Elevated fingerboard, or are my eyes deceiving me...?

Holy cow, that's wonderful.
I think the back of the peghead is pure magic. Steve |

That's my standard fingerboard treatment. It is elevated slightly above the upper bout of the sound board. The reason I do that is that I build all my guitar tops to a 25 foot radius, and I just don't want to sand that upper bout area flat to get the right trajectory on the fingerboard extension. So I make a tapered wedge there, which allows me to aim the fingerboard at the bridge with the correct height. I think it also improves the ergonomics for upper fretboard access somewhat. I send you an email shortly, Larry. We need to catch up a bit. Be well, talk soon...

Thanks, Steve! Those "constellations" on the back of the headstock (and on the heel cap) were a bit of unplanned whimsey that I just went ahead and put in there. They are shell dots, within copper rings. I'm really glad that John likes this little embellishment. He described it as "lyrical" which really made my day!
