I usually change strings on a new guitar immediately, but I liked the strings that came with my new HD-35 in 2011, so I left them until they died. Except, well, they didn’t, not for a long while.

Turns out they were Martin Lifespans. I didn’t know they were coated strings which I had assiduously avoided having preciously had a negative experience with Elixirs.

Needless to say it changed my mind about the whole coated string thing.

Anyways, has anyone A/B both Nickel Bronze and Aluminum Bronze - Thoughts?

Jonathon
My Elixirs PB Nanoweb (12-53) and D'Addario PB EXP 16 also last a long time on my guitars. I've recently put D'Addario Nickel Bronze (12-53) on my 00-15m and like its tone. NB is different from PB, more "old-school" sounding, less overtones but still bright enough. NB is a good alternative to PB. I do actually like both so may switch back to PB when it is time for string change.

Hi Bear…

I will sometimes change the plain strings in a set of Elixirs because they tend to go dead before the coated strings.

Had to admit I chuckled a bit when I saw the OP thread title. I, too, have been impatient for a set of strings to die so I can try something new. Last time it was DR Veritas - dang things lasted longer than one would think!

I've never tried Aluminum Bronze (in fact, I've never tried Ernie Ball acoustic strings). How would they would differ from Nickel Bronze (which were a great string for my Eastman E1OM)?

Obviously my tongue in cheek reply was missed. Thanks for the added input nonetheless.

You’re welcome. Not the first time I’ve missed humour.

I play both Nickel Bronze and Aluminum Bronze.
Every guitar I’ve put Nickel Bronze on has sounded better.
More “fundamental” tone over the EJ16/EJ26 sets I normally use.

Aluminum bronze are now used mostly on my Travel guitar.
They last well and stand up to taking the neck off and putting it back on.
On that guitar, they have an interesting “sizzle” to the sound.
On every wooden guitar I’ve had them on, they have the bass of PB, but the highs ring out nice and sweet. They can be strident for the first couple of days.

Both sets last well. I’ve a set of NB on my Yairi that have been on for like eight months. If I’m playing sloppily they don’t sound great. Otherwise, still good.

The last few sets of AB’s that I’ve used looked “old” and dull coming out of the package. But they have sounded fine.

I’m actually using Nickel wound Electric Strings (D’addario XLs) on my acoustic Baritone because they have enough thickness to sound great. (13/62)
But they aren’t like playing bridge cables.
I’ve also found that they last pretty well.

If I'm in the mood to go through strings quickly (acid hands), I get Aluminum Bronze. Great projection and tone! Otherwise, it's Elixir Polyweb 11's.
