That’s an early version of the song. The DSOTM version employs the vocals of Clare Torry

It sounds (to me) like he is using the theremin to duplicate her vocals.

Good question while there is background talking in the original its different words and at a different time (must just be artistic license on this version)

I had to Google what a theremin was. That's rather incredible.

At the end I heard Apollo 13 spoken.

That theremin seems ideal for this particular tune, probably the best theremin thing I have yet heard.

For those here interested in guitar ( ), here is Jake Reichbart's solo fingerstyle version...

Wow, thats awesome!

I'm an avid Pink Floyd fan, but "The Great Gig in the Sky" has never been one of my favorites.

Last year, I went to see Brit Floyd (an internationally famous PF tribute band) at a fabulous venue in Chattanooga. They performed this tune, and the woman that did the vocals was out of this world. It was absolutely riveting, touching, moving, I struggle to put it to words. She received a much-deserved standing ovation from all in attendance.

Now I "get" the song and it IS one of my favorites.

For anyone into Pink Floyd: Brit Floyd does a fabulous job putting on a performance. I've also seen Black Jacket Symphony perform Pink Floyd - and they were great - but Brit Floyd doesn't just reproduce the tones - they reproduce the feel. It's not a note-for-note reproduction - it's a reproduction of the feel. Can't say enough good about them.

I saw them a couple of years ago in Illinois. Bought tickets for myself, my Dad, and my oldest son. FANTASTIC. I’ve been a Floyd fan for a lonnnngggg time.

As to Brit Floyd...although it’s not Rogers or Waters vocally, musically they’re spot on! And, the woman you’re referring too, she was phenomenal. Standing ovation here as well. They blew “The Pink Floyd Experience” away imho.

The tragedy was someone died at the show that night. Apparently they had a seizure and fell over the rail...down into the orchestra pit. It was very odd. At intermission they announced there’d been an accident. We were 5th row center, floor, and saw absolutely nothing. Apparently he was first row center, in our line of sight for sure. Why a person with a history of seizures would come to a show that boasts its million dollar laser light show...is beyond me.

Crazy. Guessing that’s why they haven’t returned here.
