JamieJoon's Pear JB-15 has entered the finish process. I treateded the Pear and Mahogany with P juice and have foregone any pore filler. Here's the first coat of varnish, not yet dry enough to handle:
The color here is pretty accurate on my screen. |

P juice...
P juice=Pernambuco?
The pernambuco you used on some other builds sure looked sweet! Is this the same stuff and technique? Looks might nice. Cheers Paul

Pernambuco is a very powerful dye, and in the 1600’s the plant was very nearly made extinct due to Europe’s appetite for the stuff. I have developed a naive technique for extracting the dye from the dust and shavings I generated building something over 20 pernambuco guitars at this point. This year Inhave used the dye on a Maple Schoenberg, 2/5/1’s recent Myrtle 000, and now this Pearwood JB-15. In each case it has imparted a glowing warmth beyond the natural wood. There are some who believe that this is the secret to the other worldly beauty of the Cremonese era violins.

I know this is potentially repetitive, but I am enthralled by the way this Pear guitar looks! Here is its second coat basking in the sun:

I don't know whether it was the P-stain or the pear itself, but it does seem to have a beautiful chatoyance to it!

The chatoyance belongs to the Pear, but the P stain increases the warmth, contrast, and adds depth.

Just in case you thought I had succumbed to the inevitable, not yet! It’s just that both guitars I have in the pipe at the moment are in finish, and they look pretty much the same to the camera from one end of the process to the other.
Yesterday I buffed out Jmat’s 000 and today I glued the neck on, so there will be a birth announcement soon. Yesterday I also put the final coat on the Pear body, though since I used no porefiller, the neck got another today, and will get yet another tomorrow. I had thought I would take a few weeks down time as the weather here in August can be too dry to brace reliable plates, but the weather is changing, and so far this California summer is being exceptionally mild in both temperature and humidity. So I may start another guitar this week. We’ll see. I don’t have enough work to get me through the whole year, so if you’re thinking about it, give me a jingle. Phone calls are cheap these days, and sending money my way is strictly voluntary. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Etc. |

Small boost here for anyone who is contemplating a build with Bruce: I have enjoyed working with him, he has a really nice collection of interesting wood from the best Brazilian to weird but excellent stuff (my current thing) like Oregon Myrtle, European Pear, Pernambuco, etc., AND, most importantly, in my opinion Bruce is doing VERY nice work these days musically, very delicate/refined and soulful. I like his recent work best of any of his instruments I have played. His 50+ years of dedicated work have really produced something special in my opinion - a distinctive sound which appeals to me, and very sensitive instruments. I am happy with my little Snakewood Lotus, and have high expectations for my bigger European Pear Lotus #2.

Jamie's guitar is the future, you'll hear more in about a month.
Jmat's guitar's bridge is made and glued on, and I hope to have pictures of it w/strings tomorrow! I have started a new build today. I do not yet know whether the customer wishes to be named. It is an FT-0C-WRX. That's a single 0 cutaway with simple trim. This one is Adirondack over Honduras mahogany. Because I had a killer top on hand that would only make an 0, I used it. Two mahogany guitars in a quarter! |
