If only you could see the entire collection Tom. Oh wait, you're coming down! Good! You'll get the grand tour, which no doubt will leave you scratching your head for days...

I really don’t want you to start off on the wrong foot using just any old card and then think that it’s not for you. I tell you what. Just go down and get a Subway $25 gift card. Send it to me. I’ll break it in for you. Get it ready for long term use, and then I’ll mail it back. It will be good for a couple years of service.

You’re welcome John. In lutherie as in palm reading, you get what you pay for. So, of course a $50 card would be that much better and last that much longer.

Everyone doesn’t use an old #4 plane? The way Steve taught me, I figured it was industry standard.

When you are doing that you must hit the top sometimes, is that OK cuz you still have to sand down the top more also? It just seems like that file would leave pretty deep grooves in an already thin top?

Tom, you’re right in that this could be a frightening proposition. What’s hard to see from this angle is that the end of the file has a couple of wraps of tape around it. This allows is to slide free across the top without biting into the top. The goal is to just make contact with the business edge of the file at the binding. To be sure, much care is taken.

What are you guys doing with that groove under the fingerboard extension?

That groove accommodates the truss rod, and the tr nut will be accessible from the sound hole. |
