FWIW I gig all the time with an SM58 into my Loudbox Mini. I have also recorded acoustic guitar with it.

You can see a 57 on many Tom Petty videos. Is it my favorite mic for anything? No. It just works for everything. Perfect for the non mic junkie. But you have heard many guitars recorded with one from studios with dozens of choices.
