What an amazing band!!! Some of my favorite players, backing one of my favorite singer/songwriter/artists!!!

Finally got a chance to hear the whole show, as opposed to the slightly edited version on the video of the concert (which is terrific, by the way!), and enjoy hearing Jaco's solo/improv where he plays a bit of "Third Stone From The Sun"... would have been nice to have Lyle take a long section, too; he was one of my favorite keyboardists, after Bill Evans, and it always seemed to me that he "soaked up" of lot of Bill Evans' sensibilities and taste with his piano playing...

Man! I would've loved to have seen that show!!!

I, too, saw that tour in Minneapolis, a couple weeks before the concert was taped in Santa Barbara. It was a peak experience for me, and quite a treat to have the show recorded. I recall it came out on 12" laser disc and was shown on Showtime.

The spring before the tour, I had tickets to hear Pat Metheny Group in Grand Forks, ND. The Red River flooded the venue and the whole region and the show was cancelled. That was a major disappointment.

But then the S&L tour was announced with a Mpls date, and Joni and the players in her band were a collaboration to die for. Jaco, Pat, Lyle Mays, Don Alias, Michael Brecker... And Joni! They were young then (I was younger and thought they were old.... most in their 30s), but had listened to all of them on vinyl I bought of my own volition.... I am a lucky person.

my fond memory compels me to say:
I saw two consecutive nights on that tour - Vancouver, B.C and Portland OR.

Huge fan of Joni as well as Metheny and Brecker and Jaco and Lyle and Don.
What a fantastic lineup and the Persuasions too.

Legendary. Twice in a lifetime experience

Default Pat on this tour...

"That band was like owning a Ferrari and only driving it around the block."
- Pat Metheny, in the indispensable "Pat Metheny: The ECM Years."

Though that band never reached full throttle, it navigated and illustrated Joni's tricky changes with effortless facility. It was those Rock Crossovers, like his hit with Bowie, that helped lead me out of Rock and into Pat and Lyle's universe, which has been the sweet spot in my life as listener ever since. Without this album, my life would have been different.

A great band. Jaco Pastorius was a terrific bass player and I alway liked Lyle Mays on keyboard. I think I saw them in Philly but that was so long ago I can't be sure. Those were my foggy years.

Nice post.... I have the album and the video and still enjoy this great concert. I live just south of Pat Metheny's home town and have enjoyed many of his concerts at festivals and some really small venues over the years. Really sorry to see Lyle's need to change careers and even more when he recently passed...

Default IMHO...

Lyle Mays was the most indispensable member of the Pat Metheny Group. Why? Because he wasn't purely a jazz musician. He loved classical music and progressive rock, and he brought those elements of composition, orchestration, drama and storytelling that are often missing in the jazz genre. He and Pat fed compositional ideas off each other; once they told me that I'd never be able to guess who wrote what sections of music.

Most other jazz guitarists and pianists established one signature tone and stuck to it. Meanwhile Pat was busy inventing new guitar voices and styles, and Lyle was writing synth sounds from scratch and performing them live with flawless timing, all the while playing difficult piano lines. And on record, Lyle's piano tones were the richest, most present I've ever heard. During live shows, I always wished they'd turn Pat down and Lyle up!

I've been missing Lyle since his last PMG project, The Way Up. But I'm happy to see that Pat's current ensemble includes the Welsh pianist Gwellyn Simcock. His extended solo on the "Everything Explained" from Pat's latest release excites me almost as much.

Default Thanks...

I knew that the day it happened, first seeing it here. What I meant was that I've missed his music. Every time I've seen Pat without Lyle, it's like there's an empty chair there.

I wish I had a dollar for every time I played that album/CD/DVD.

What a band. I saw Jaco a couple of times not too long after that came out, and another not too long before he passed. Intense dude for sure.

Sadly, only Joni and Pat are still with us.

Jaco, Don Alias, Michael Brecker, Lyle Mays all gone way too early.
