Marc Beneteau built six guitars for me, and each one was a gem. Wonderful craftsmanship, lively and responsive.

Je suis d’accord avec Daniel. Je possède une guitare Northwood, elle est excellente. Ce sont de superbes instruments.

Appears I have some catching up to do! I'm on #2 already thinking of #3

I'll second (or third?) John McQuarrie or Northwood Guitars. I was so impressed this February finally getting to play a few that I've decided to pursue a Northwood myself in 2021.

Sheldon Schwartz is also an amazing luthier. I was able to play a guitar of his at La Conner, and I hoped to see him again this (alas, cancellation).

All the builders mentioned are all very good. i have had brief moments with Morgan, Kronbauer, Northwood, House, Webber, Beneteau and Michaud. The one that stood out for me was Joel Michaud. Insanely good, just my personal take.

Hard to argue with any of the aforementioned recommendations, but I never miss mentioning Marc Beneteau and Joshua House as I have a few. Ron Belanger is a friend and I've played lots of his guitars and one bouzouki that just knocked my socks off but I didn't have the funds available. Another friend used to let me babysit his Ted Thompson for prolonged periods and it was stellar.

I would like to add Wayne O'Connor of Peterborough, Ontario's Hank To Hendrix shop. Wayne makes some fine flat top guitars which are a pleasure to play.
Dave Fox, also of Peterborough, has made some fine J-50/J45 style guitars.
Ron Belanger has already been mentioned, but it won't hurt to mention him again, since I have played his guitars and can testify that they are gems.
A friend let me play his David Wren guitar at a basement jam and it was wonderful.
I know a few folks who own Grit Laskin guitars and they are a pleasure to look at as well as to listen to.

+1 John McQuarrie of Northwood. $7k gets you to some amazing woods with an amazing builder.

Not sure if he’s been mentioned, but Sheldon Schwartz is an outstanding builder.

I read through the thread and didn't see Fab Alberico's name come up. He is an outstanding luthier, and the builder of my very first custom guitar (back in 2001).
Fabrizio Alberico
He was based in the Toronto area at that time, but re-located shortly thereafter to the Victoria B.C. area of the country.
A very gifted artisan, and totally committed to his craft. Highly recommended!

Et je vois qu'il y a d’autres Francophones ici! C’est beau!

I don’t think anyone has mentioned Dion James in Edmonton yet, he is a sponsor here on the AGF. I have not played any of his guitars, but he gets good reviews from those that do, should be in the OP’s price range.

From those that I have played, my Michaud is just stellar. I let a Northwood pass me by that the sound and playability still haunt me some. Best feeling neck I think I have ever played.

Yes, Mike, I mentioned Sheldon's work. It amazes me that folks on the AGF are not more familiar with him. I know he puts zero energy into marketing, but the Schwartz I acquired from you is majestic. I always wondered what people meant when they talked about a guitar having a "piano-like tone" and I admit I thought some of that was hype. And then I played your Schwartz.

I'll throw out another nod for Marc Beneteau. I've got one in my lap at this very moment and another coming early next year. Wonderful guitars. Mine is loud and very lively with nice fat trebles. Reasonable prices as well.

I live in Regina and have a strong local bias. Every self-respecting acoustic player here has at least one instrument built by Peter Sawchyn. And that's not only because he is the only luthier in town but because his builds are fantastic and also surprisingly affordable. The only other builder that I had a chance to play guitars for comparison were Halcyon and they are not nearly as nice.

Oh, I so want one of his guitars. Long wait time, 3+ years last time I checked.
