What a beautiful sound board. I’ll be watching the rest of this one!

Default A long awaited update...

So I mentioned before that I shared a few ideas with Mike during my initial meeting with him. He was excited by them and embraced them, and then had to figure out how to incorporate them. I think he had a few of those "what have I gotten myself into moments" as he began on the fretboard for this guitar!

Typical fretboard binding and purfling weren't really an option for this one because of the way some of the elements worked. So Mike devised a clever way to do it with his CNC by inlaying the entire Wenge fretboard surface into a Rocklite substrate and then proceding with the other inlays after that. It required a fairly complex software routine that he needed to write in order drive the CNC to produce the desired outcome. It requires writing the routine to produce 3D surfaces, primarily the scooped (scalloped) fretboard end.

Suffice it to say that the entire procedure required 12 different milling operations and 6 tool changes. I'm thrilled with the outcome and so grateful to Mike for all the ideas and energy that he has put into this build. I can't wait to see the progress as it develops!

The notches on the side of the fretboard are for the Malachite fret markers that will be installed later.

I'll let the pictures speak for themselves and show the process...

Thanks for following along...

Thanks, No-otis! It's cool--I get to pitch my ideas to Mike, and then he has to figure out how to make them reality!

I've been trying to keep out of the build threads unless something really pulls me in. So here I am. That is just gorgeous. Looks like a fine guitar coming together
