Default Shipping partner?

What is a shipping partner? I ordered a guitar strap the 23rd from a retailer in Indiana. It went out that same day USPS. It is out for delivery today. I ordered some books from a place in Missouri, about two hundred miles away from me on the 19th. The USPS tracking says that it was picked up by the "shipping partner" and USPS is awaiting arrival. I've noticed this Shipping Partner a lot. It seems to be a sticking point in the process.

They think "shipping partner" sounds better than "subcontractor."

Most, if not all the common carriers (USPS, Fedex, UPS) work together these days. That is, most likely, what is meant by shipping partner.
