I'll vote for the single guitar. For me personally, I guess it's ADD thing, but the more I go down a rabbit hole with with different kinds of gear and stuff the less I'm actually focused on actually making music.. I just use a 00 myself and I'm very content.

1 single mid-high level guitar or a little collection?

This is easily a personal choice question.

I like the variety of choices I have, but it took quite a few years to get there.

And I believe in play before pay.

Most of them are kind of 'middle-of-the-road', but all passed my sound and play tests before they followed my home.

I prefer variety, so I'd have a hard time getting along with one guitar. And it doesn't have to be all or nothing. Keep the top two of the bunch and trade the other 4 for something else?

Used to be quantity over quality, till I decided to consolidate and trade a bunch of guitars up for 1. That 1 was all I needed…for like 8 months.

Since then, I have added a couple others. So get the ONE you really want, then add on when ya can. (I like having at least 2 for variety)

There are so many variables like what type of music do you play and where you are in terms of skill level and what your ultimate goals are.

I've heard some excellent music come out of inexpensive guitars but on the other hand I can easily recognize quality in tone, fit and finish and it's hard to settle on something that you know is only so so.

I've played guitar (rather poorly) for most of my life and its only been the last ten years or so since I started buying some expensive guitars. I can't go back.

Hi Cri75!

Very few guys swap their mid-line guitars for a single high end and stop there.

I've played more than 60 years, and when I sold everything and bought the Olson in 1992, that was my plan. It's a great guitar, still my main acoustic.

I also have two other hand built guitars, a couple upper mid line acoustics, an American Strat plus and an inexpensive Tele.

Even at age 74 I hesitate to declare that's all folks!

Analogy is our friend.

"Love the one you're with", to quote Stephen Stills. It took me twice to find the right wife, one of my friends is on #4 and still looking.

I tend to have a very monogamous personality, and once I find the right (partner) guitar I tend to stay with them.

As far as sound goes, if it's the right guitar then playing style can change what's being produced by a lot.

Having different guitars such as a resonator, nylon, 12 string, or electric are all good options, but concentrating my efforts on a single 6 string acoustic yields the greatest satisfaction for me.

I prefer one good guitar, up to some price point. But that's me. Not everyone appreciates what's in a good guitar. To me, the Martin 00-28VS is a good guitar. I have it's bigger brother, the 000-28VS. Very nice guitar.

That's good advice but he wants a 00-28VS.

When I retire the plan is to get a part time job in a music store. Hopefully, get an employee discount and have an employee purchase option.

Preferably 2 guitars. One expensive and one inexpensive guitar.

I've had as few as one acoustic and one electric and as many as about three of each. I could certainly get by with one acoustic again, but I REALLY like having one mahogany and one rosewood - they're really different and on any given day, one is likely to scratch my itch more than the other. So, for me, it's TWO, as good as I can afford, and maybe a beater on the side too, for travel, bad conditions, etc.

I play both of my good acoustics a lot, and would much rather not have to get by without either of them. I also have one carbon fiber that's not a beater, but plays that role - I don't play it much but I'm really glad to have it for those times when I'm just not gonna pull out one of my nice wooden ones. I have two electrics but play one of them about 99% of the time. I may sell the other one eventually, but I paid very little for it, and on a rare occasion, I really do like it.

I've got half a dozen. Only one of them cost over $500. The rest are imports with laminated backs and sides. I play one of them the vast majority of the time (a $400 Farida 00), but I like having all of them around for occasional variety--and the hassle of selling them off for the prices they would bring is not worth it-- I've told the wife/kids to give them away when I go around the bend

I could be happy with one, but happier with a bunch!

I'd prefer to have one stellar guitar. One that really moves me.
