I thought I would update this with a final thought. I never did figure out exactly what was happening - I experienced more noise issues in a new location after changing to a fresh battery so I decided to take it into a tech and he didn't exactly know what was going on - he plugged it in and it sounded ok at his shop. I decided to replace the transducer in the guitar because I didn't want to spend anymore time being frustrated by the problem. It was a nearly 20 year old fishman anyway - time for an upgrade... I bought a K&K passive pickup (eliminates the battery problem - yay!) and tested it out on a gig last night. Worked perfectly. Problem Solved.

I had an old (close to 30 year old) UST give up on me. It started sounding slightly distorted, and then one day it went dead. K + K to the rescue!
