One can strum on any guitar one wants. Whether one guitar is better suited to being strummed than another is largely personal preference.

That said, as a gross generalization, those fingerpicking often prefer wider necks and wider string spacing at the bridge. Conversely, those who strum often prefer narrower necks and closer string spacing at the bridge. There are many guitars, 12 or 14 fret, with each arrangement.

Heck, most of 'em!

(Seriously though, strumming some chords on a 12 fret guitar--and really any size-- while sitting on the couch is one of life's simple pleasures. That compact feel is just wonderful.)

Potentially ANY 12 fret acoustic can be good...or great even...for strumming.

It just depends on the individual guitar and what it's "voice" works for.

And...quite frankly...it also depends at least as much, if not more, on the players own ability and technique, and how well that works for strumming on any given guitar.

How any guitar sounds, regardless of brand, size, shape, woods, and spec's...is really, for the larger measure, up to, and in the hands of, the player, and how good they are at playing.

There are many methods of chording.

Many of us play all six string shapes which is really playing TWO chords, as a basic major or minor chord only requires one Hey note, a 3rd and a 5th.

And with the CAGED chords you play both twice (with a full 6 string strum).

Have a look at this :

Silly, THANKS for a very informative video!

ALL - has anyone found some 12-fretters more (or less) suited for more "assertive" strumming. For example, if I imagine I'm Tom Petty and really start getting into American Girl -- will certain 12-fretters handle it better than others ? What has your experience been ?

Thanks!

Hi again, For aggressive rhythm "strumming" the larger the guitar the better, so dreads are the thing. The advantage of 12 fretters is mainly about wider fretboards an aspect that is rarely an issue for basic strumming.

I’ll say my 00015m served well as my only guitar for over two years.

A Martin D-15S, slope-shoulder dreadnought is great for strumming.

A 12 fret dread will (generally) give you a more assertive sound, but I'd say more for flat picking rather than straight out strumming. For that, I much prefer a slope shoulder dread like a 14 fret Bourgeois Slope D (which can also be found with 12 frets)
