When I was learning Travis picking I would first learn the bass portion of sections by playing along with a recording of the song. Also, the thumb isnt usually totally independent, just playing alternating beats mostly.

I've got the Doc Watson book with tab to work with.
THere's a funny comment in there about how a guitar teacher will tell you it is not proper to use a 'thumb over' approach to play the low E string, even tho that's the way he did it. and the way I handle the walking bass notes of that song. it's a great piece to work on, and, other posters have already said what I will emphasize - go slow for a long time and work up the speed slowly. it's totally worth the ride, imo. yours in tune! amyfb

Due to some issues with my hand i have not been able to practice as much as i wanted over the last few weeks, but the last few days i worked on it for maybe 30 minutes a day the progress is a lot fast.

Some times a break in the action, opens new windows. If I quit working on a song that I've been practicing for a couple days... Sometimes it falls into place after a short break
