Santa Cruz wanted a Mahogany ended up with Walnut
Interesting day at the guitar store.
I have been stalking the internet thinking about buying a new acoustic. had a heard a lot about the Lowden Blackwood but always had a craving for A Santa Cruz Mahogany. Went to a store that had both, Tried the Lowden and realized with just a few strums that was not my style. Tried the Mahogany OM SC and was not disappointed. Although sounded like most Mahogany guitars. Then the salesman handed me a Santa Cruz Walnut with cedar top. I was surprised how amazing Walnut can sound. Ended up taking the Walnut/Cedar home. I never heard of walnut/cedar before. Just curious if I am the only one that has fallen in love with this combo? Last edited by echo44; 01-15-2020 at 11:16 PM. |

Congrats on the new acquisition. Love my Cedar / Walnut Breedlove. Tried many other combos, but this one is something special (IMHO).

That's a combo I've thought about once or twice. I'd love to hear that. I'm jealous. And Santa Cruz guitars are personal. There's nothing like them once one becomes a friend.

So what is it about SCGC guitars that makes them "personal"? And to the OP, I also decided that Lowdens don't suit me. Hmm. Are guitar companies that distinct in their products? |

Cedar and walnut is a very common combination in Irish and British made guitars, and indeed it works very well.

I have a walnut/cedar guitar I had made. Beautiful wood, nice tone, kind of crappy build but I like the combo. I have a walnut electric as well and love it.

Congrats on a fine instrument! SC makes amazing guitars!
Ironically, Lowden does quite well with walnut and cedar, as do many builders. Build style/voicing have MUCH to do with what sounds good on one and not-so-much on others to our ears.

I spent some quality time with a Santa Cruz redwood over walnut and was smitten. Enjoy your new friend.

In the right hands - both luthier and player - cedar/walnut can be a wonderful combo. I have played quite a few Santa Cruz guitars and they rarely disappoint. Congrats on finding one that works for your hands and ears. I hope that you enjoy it for years to come!
