Anyone who plays folk music has been influenced by John Hurt, if not directly then in the music that has come after him from people who listened to him, or "grandchildren" or "great grandchildren." Down the line.

Yes, he is a giant of American folk blues - I hear a lot of his influence on Bob Dylan.

Yes! And deceptively tough stuff to play.

I agree, Jeff... Hurt is a challenge. There's more going on than it seems, but that's what makes him so much fun to play!

Glad to know others enjoy him too. BTW, Scott Ainslie does a wonderful job of playing and teaching Hurt's style. He has a page on his website dedicated to him and includes several tabs. Here's Scott playing the delightful, "Let the Mermaids Flirt With Me," on a gorgeous Froggy at Dream Guitars.

Tom Feldmann is another guy who does a great job playing and teaching Hurt tunes. His lessons are available by subscription on his website, or individually at his site or Stefan Grossman's. Here is part one of a free 5 part video (with tab) series he did for Acoustic Guitar Magazine on C. C. Rider a while back. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEnDKfxErko Many of Tom's lessons are accessible to those just starting out in this style.

Larry, thanks! It is great stuff, isn't it? I love it. Hurt's thumb was incredible. His alternating bass bounced like a super ball... he loved to hit both the 4th and 3rd strings on beats 2 and 4. Made those beats sound accented... really added to the syncopated feel. Lots of fun.

Gotta love MJH! A regular listen if mine for longer than I care to admit. Still only playing a few songs finger style but started with a couple of his. Have seen Scott Ainsley play at least 1/2 dz times and took one of his workshops hosted by AGF member Boone. Great guy too. Tom Feldman taught the section I was in at Fur Peace a couple of years ago. He is a great player, super guy, and one really good teacher.

Thanks for posting this. He does a great job teaching. The tab is very helpful with a couple things I couldn’t quite pick up. For anyone else looking for the whole series it’s actually from Vintage Guitar magazine. Might save you a nanosecond of googling time.
