One thing that hasn't been mentioned yet is your feel for the seller based on your interactions. With a transaction like this, the integrity of the seller is as important (maybe more) than the action item being sold.

Talk to the seller (phone or in person) to get a feel. What is the amp's history? Has it been serviced? Original tubes? Has he sold/purchased lots of gear? Does he have roots in your community, or has he just moved there?

During your discussions, try to get a feel for whether he is a straight shooter or not.

I'm no expert, but I'd take my favorite guitar and plug it in to see if there are any hiss or other unwanted noise. Adjust all the pots checking for snap crackle and pops....or your local radio stations.

Not certain if this is a good thing but, I think someone suggested on a similar topic, would you want to simply power up the amp without any guitars or effects and slowly increase the volume to see if there were any odd noises?
