I too don't really care for the usual hits such as Margaritaville (although I performed that on my honeymoon at the "guest talent night" the resort offered) and definitely not Why Don't We Get Drunk and S____.
Like many of you I prefer his fun or thoughtful earlier songs. I especially like Survive, Incommunicado, Changing Channels, Coconut Telegraph. Lots of others too. Sadly, most casual fans never hear those, and so think of only the popular tunes.

I wonder if there is any backlash in Hawaii over the I dont know volcano song?

Mine too, probably because it was the first one of his I heard. "A Pirate Looks at Forty" comes close, though--perhaps because Steve Goodman had a hand in it, perhaps because it is a rare look at the reality beneath the happy-go-lucky surface of the beach bum lifestyle, and perhaps because it was written from the point of view of a maturing person, not a Peter Pan in flip-flops in aloha shirt & cutoffs.
But he's definitely not "wasting away" in Margaritaville.

And ironic to the theme of the thread, Pirate contains one of my favorite Bubba lyrics:
“I made enough money to buy Miami but I pissed it away so fast.” Been a fan for a long time. Not overly fond of his new stuff but the older music really tells a story. |

Exactly. Where's the "like" button?

I appreciate Jimmy.
I’ve played his tunes, but have never bought any of his records. The absolute worst concert I’ve attended was JB at Irvine Meadows. Many of his fans were drunk as skunks! Like a nightmare Frat party. It took me 45 minutes to attempt a restroom/beer run. Surly 30-40 something’s nose to shoulder like a stuffed cattle yard. I never did get that beer. The worst audience ever. Bunch of Drunks Gone Troppo.

Jimmy's a great guy. He's well off because unlike his recording persona, "I made enough money to buy Miami, but I pissed it away so fast", he actually is a miser and invested his money well in real estate early on. Afterwards, he began the aviation business, then franchised Margaritaville businesses successfully. Then came other restaurants, alcohol, cruise-ship theme licensing deals and never dismiss the touring. He's made the majority of his investible income from almost unmatched touring success. Great business mind. There are some people you meet and immediately feel "this guy's got something to teach me". I've tried to follow his lead for decades in regards to investing. It's a sound and smart portfolio-building strategy.

My first concert that I went to with friends (I had been to a few that my parents took me to) was Jimmy Buffett. It was in Austin at the Armadillo World Headquarters, which was a very famous venue back in the day.
"Come Monday" was actively very popular on the radio at the time, so I think it must have been 1974. I would have been 14. Jerry Jeff Walker got up on stage with him at the end and they sang some songs. Good memory for me.
