Craigslist Caveats
I was perusing local musical instrument a listings on my local Craigslist and came across this as part of an ad for a bass offered for sale. Love it! I plan to take a similar approach the next time I offer something on CL. (You can tell this guy's been around a block or two)
PLEASE READ BEFORE CONTACTING ME. I can be reached about anytime of the day so just text or call for a meeting time. When you contact me I will respond with the next available time that the item can be seen. My general location is on the site map but when you are ready to see the item I will give you my physical address. The price is non-negotiable. I do not take payments. I do not accept checks. Cash only! I do not want to barter or trade. I sell on a first come first serve basis which means I will not hold merchandise. I will not meet you somewhere. I will not ship or deliver any merchandise. I do not respond to messages with email requests or links.

Not sure I understand "I will not meet you somewhere." I mean, assuming we're talking about a highly-trafficked location or a police-station parking lot and not a back alley, wouldn't that be far safer than inviting a random stranger to your house or place of business?

I'm not letting strangers into my house to scope out what else I have. Walmart parking lot, police station parking lot, anywhere but here. Edit - having said that, I did buy a great guitar from a guy selling some flatpicking books who had me meet him at his house. Wouldn't have found it otherwise. Guess I'm just not that trusting. I believe most people are good and I don't expect bad things from interacting with strangers, but it only takes one. Better safe than sorry, as they say. The rest of that ad is right on though.

I have sold several used guitars in the last few years on Craigslist, including a Lowden, Martin, Furch and some equipment. All were meetings set up for a public place and all within a half hour drive from my house.

great except that a public meeting place is always safer but not always able to be done. i don't really want people coming to my house with their 45.
maybe he can add, "no weapons allowed." play music!

LOL! I meant to mention that too. I'm assuming he's referring to installment payments.

That's how I interpreted it also. As for the meeting location, I think I would play that one by ear as well.

I'd add "If this ad is up, it's still available."

When buying I’ve met people at their homes, but after talking with them. For sales, I specify local cash sale only, and give a general location. When a request seems legitimate, and after a phone conversation, they get the address of our shop. That way the transaction’s at a commercial location, which gives them confidence, and is far safer than at a home.

Well, I can kinda understand this...
Biggest problem with Craigslist for me is all the no-shows. I have wasted a lot of time on folks who never show up or even call to cancel. |

For any item over a few hundred dollars, I contact the seller and arrange to meet at my bank. We then find a quiet corner, stairwell or other suitable area to check out the item. If I decide to buy the item we go to the teller, I sign a withdrawal slip and the teller gives the seller the money out of my bank account. I never touch the money. Taking a lot of money to meet up with someone in an unfamiliar location is very dangerous.

I don't answer emails that are just low ball offers, don't mention anything about the item I am selling, or I just feel are scams.
