Default The Ten Happiest Cities in America

According to the November National Geographic:
1 - Boulder, Colorado
2 - Santa Cruz/Watsonville, California
3 - Charlottesville, Virginia
4 - Fort Collins, Colorado
5 - San Luis Obispo/Paso Robles/Arroyo Grande, California
6 - San Jose/Sunnyvale/Santa Clara, California
7 - Provo/Orem, Utah
8 - Bridgeport/Stamford, Connecticut
9 - Barnstable Town, Massachusetts
10 - Anchorage, Alaska

No comment from me, except
- I think clumping a bunch of towns together & calling it a city is cheating, and
- Bridgeport? Really?

Northern California is well represented—not a surprise. Nowhere I’d rather live than Santa Cruz. I spend the great bulk of my weekends surfing and mountain biking there. Not convenient for me as I work in SF, but it’s in my future.

With the Twins, Vikings, Timberwolves and Wild, I’m not at all surprised that Minneapolis (let alone any city in Minnesota) is not on the list.

I have to say that I pity the sports fans. I have worked with folks who were bummed all week if their team(s) lost. I can't imagine living like that. Personally, I like it here in the Twin Cities. Lots to do and I have plenty to keep me busy during the winter.

Having lived & worked in several of them, I can absolutely agree that the list is valid.....to wit, not in any particular order:

- Bridgeport/Stamford CT: It's like a half hour to Guilford, where Acoustic Music is. That's got to be worth something. Plus Toad's in New Haven, among other excellent clubs....
- Santa Cruz/Watsonville CA: Santa Cruz Guitar Company, Rick Turner/Renaissance Guitars, Jeff Traugott Guitars, Ed Claxton, Stephen Strahm....the list goes on. Plus Sylvan Music, among the very best shops and staff out there (and two other credible places in town) that have amazing selection. Plus the Kuumbwa, the Catalyst, the Rio, and a host of other venues. Love it.
- San Jose/Sunnyvale/Santa Clara: Gryphon Strings....the ne plus ultra of a shop and repair place, utterly knowledgeable and wonderful and straightforward and generally the best of the best. Plus venues all over the place and a LOT of great players.
- San Luis Obispo/Paso Robles/Arroyo Grande: National Reso-Phonic. LR Baggs. I think Butch Boswell was there for a while - not sure if he is now. But lots of good music and good venues.

The rest aren't bad either.....but that was what came to mind quickly.

You might be surprised at some of the incredible features and attractions found in Hartford and Bridgeport. The state is small - you can leave the city and end up in the hills in less than a half hour. There is poverty in our cities, but then, this is the case around the country - in some areas, it just hides a little better,

IMO. I live in one of the prettiest states in the US - close to Boston, New York, the ocean and the mountains; Nearby is the Hudson Valley and the Berkshires. And we have the best pizza in the country. The health care is excellent, the population well-educated and if you are willing to travel within an hour's drive, incredible, intimate, music venues. We've also got some amazing guitar stores within an hour or two hour drive.

I'm very happy to live here. These 'surveys' are a click-bait joke and are barely worth the electrons that form them.

I'm happy, and I'm on the South side of Chicago.

Well, it's about 6 hours South.....

I've got to stick up for Connecticut, too. I've lived here all my life, and have no desire to relocate to any of the wonderful places I've been lucky enough to visit.

Not having read the story, my guess is that "Bridgeport/Stamford" includes all of the suburban, coastal and rural areas nearby, which is where some of the richest folks in the world choose to live.

The Hartford area has the number 1 minor league baseball stadium in the country, several major museums and universities, some of the best public and private schools in the country, multiple places to hear great live music every night of the week, stops on the professional golf and tennis tours and the best womens's basketball anywhere, and a very high standard of living. All of this is within half an hours drive from my house. I can be at the ocean or mountains in an hour, and Boston or New York in 2 hours.

Yes, the climate is pretty rough for a few months, and our politicians continue to act like we can print money in our basements, but I will put our overall quality of life up against anyplace.

End of rant...

Just returned from two weeks on Maui. We visit every year, so I'm surprised NG skipped Hawaii. In other studies our 50th state has been ranked #1 for happiness and long life expectancy.

'Barnstable' is one of a cluster of small villages that are often clumped together under the general name - they include Hyannis (shopping mall central + downtown 'Main Street'), Hyannisport (famous for the Kennedys) and many others. My mother lives in Marstons Mills, another of the villages. I spent a couple of summers there during college days, too.
If you have never lived on Cape Cod, you don't know the standards:
1) Complain about all the tourists
2) Complain about the summer traffic
3) Complain about the high property taxes
4) By the end of October: "YAY - the tourists and traffic are gone until next year".
So whatever categorizing they used must have been done in the winter!
