Default Peter Jackson WW1 Film.

They Shall Not Grow Old.... released yesterday.

Imperial War Museum gave Peter Jackson access to 100's of hours of WW1 footage.
Images for this documentary were restored and enhanced frame by frame.
Film speeds adjusted to give more accurate lifelike movement.
Colorized.
Jackson even hired lip readers to give us actual dialogue.

Reviews coming in all agree the work is stunning.

It does look incredible.
Production took about 3 years.

Peter Jackson may return to his 'Dambusters' remake scripted by Stephen Fry.
Here is Fry pictured with Jackson and a Lancaster bomber with the Barnes Wallis spinning bomb mounted underneath can be clearly seen in the background.

This is the first time, in my recollections, that anyone has applied modern techniques to handle the speed problems with WWI-era film. As you may or may not know, remote film cameras of the day were powered by hand-loaded spring movements. As the springs either wore or wound down, the movements ran slow and inconsistently. When the film was played back on calibrated-speed projectors, the playback was thus sped up and contained jerks. Jackson has applied modern scanning and processing technology to calibrate and smooth out the movies. If you notice, he has also heavily applied "foley," that is performed sound, to fill in the expected ambience. As you said, the results are remarkable.

I've taken an interest in the period but am aware of the barrier that the playback problems have imposed between myself and the reality and personalities of the period when what is before my eyes are quickly jerking about figures who react emotionally in impossibly quick manner. Here is where Jackson has triumphed: he has restored our vision of the humanity of the people of that period.

Jackson implies it's been done before: https://youtu.be/PdY-1u-rk_M?t=105

Reminds me of "tweening" from the Flash days of the web.

I am REALLY looking forward to seeing this milestone.

I wish my vision was better so I could build a couple of his Wingnut Wings 1/32 scale models, but alas it would be a waste of money.

Saw this advertised a couple of weeks ago, it’s really got my attention.
Watching the trailers shift from b&w to colour is amazing.
Suddenly they’re flesh & blood, real people.
Fitting of course, as we near the centenary of wars end this Nov.

Seems like it will be amazing.

But - hundreds of hours? So, it's a (searchable?) online archive?

I believe Peter Jackson was given access to hundreds of hours of footage by the Imperial War Museum.
The finished documentary runs about 90+ minutes.

This has been featured quite heavily in the news here in the UK. The footage looks stunning. You see these individuals as real people rather than grainy, jerky black and white shadows. Really looking forward to seeing it.

I'm looking forward to this, but I will wait until it is being shown at our tasteful small independent film theatre where one may sit with other grown ups and sip a glass of wine without children and other people munching at foul smelling junk food.

I will never go to a cinema multiplex cinema again - my last experience (the last Star Wars edition was a most unpleasant experience, and we had to wear earplugs and shower and wash all our clothes as soon as we returned to get rid the smell of stewed pork sausages and "popcorn". Ugh.
