Default 80/20's on all hog.

Sunday I put some Martin light 80/20's on a Alvarez MDA66shb. At first it was a little much. Today, after a total of 3 hours of playing and being out in 50% humidity for 3 days, WOW! Was never a big fan of 80/20's, but it works on this guitar.

Yeah, they’re great for brightening things up if that’s what’s needed.

I use 80/20 lights of different brands and Martin Retro lights on my 000-15M - love it!

My Gibson J-30 (Bird) hog likes 80/20's but also likes EJ 16's/17's. I even tried Ernie Ball 80/20 lights thinking they were 12/54 but were 11/52, and they sounded so good I ordered 3 sets of the 12/54's and the 11's sounded better. Go figure.

I like the Martin retro 80/20 bluegrass strings on my D-35 sometimes, because I can’t shoot lasers from my eyes so my guitar will have to do the job.

My 000 Spruce/Mahogany as well as my 000 full body Hog/Hog Just want D’Addario EJ16 PB. They spit out anything else and to my ears I don’t blame them.

My 1995 Gibson J-30 Montana Banner will only wear D’Addario EJ24 PB True Mediums. Anything else makes it sulk.

So as far as the 80/20’s are concerned they are non-existing in my Mahogany line up.
Just saying,
Blues

I've got a spare set of Elixir 80/20s that were too bright for my Lowden F32. Planning to give them a shot on the 00015m, curious to see if it will work.

I’ve been trying out a lot of different strings and currently have Lifespan light 80/20 on my D15.

It’s been a few days and they’re still very bright; I’m swapping out to nickel bronze lights this evening and see how they contend

I am a firm believer in different strings for different guitars and I experiment a lot with alloys and gauges. I'm not a fan of coated strings - don't like the slickness - prefer a little grit/grab of round wound strings - I do like some treated strings (Martin Lifespan/Cleartone). I prefer 80/20s (GHS Bright Bronze Light or Ernie Ball Earthwood Med-light) on my Taylor 324e (Hog top/Tasmanian Blackwood b/s) Really sweetens up the sound (phosphor bronze sound too harsh on this guitar). Phosphor Bronze Medium or Bluegrass Gauge are a must on my Martin D40. My old maple Guild dread responds well to almost anything I put on her... currently light gauge Martin Monel Retros but my favorite is D'Addario EJ19 Phosphor Bronze Bluegrass (adds bass, punch and projection).

My D-18 doesn't really like 80/20's but I tried them on my Eastman OM which seemed a bit dark and they really sound good so I am going to stick with them on that guitar. You just got to try stuff and decide what is best for your ears.

You probably won't get this post being yesterdays, but I forgot to ask if your J-30 is getting close to needing a neck reset? On mine (1986) the saddle was shaved down for max playability by the previous owner 17 years ago, but even if I replace it, the string break angle is not really enough. Still plays Okay, but maybe could get better sound with a neck reset.

I've been liking Santa Cruz Mid-Tension Parabolics strings on my all-hog 000, 80/20's were a little bright...but to each guitar -and players' ears- their own.

I've been tempted to try Santa Cruz Parabolics on one of my guitars; maybe my 000 Larrivee. Intrigued but apprehensive about 3x the cost of so many other good strings. What do you like about them?
