Five inch powered monitors are as small as I would go for general listening, and they won't have a lot of bass if that's what your preference is.

Do consider what you'll be listening to, as it wouldn't make a lot of sense to spend more than a couple hundred on powered monitors that you'll be using to listen to mp3s or web-based sound files with.
I use a pair of these hooked up to my iMac for both mixing my own recordings and for simply listening to music on the computer, and I've been very, very happy with them. Having the bass port in the front makes them much easier to work with in tight spaces than other monitors I looked at.

I finally pulled the trigger on new small powered speakers.

I first got a GE 4-Device Audio/Video Switch for various input sources

Then to the switch output I hooked up a Polk Magnifi Mini Soundbar System.

It fits easily on a computer desk.

A local dealer has a pretty good sale on these this weekend. They quoted me another $20 off each if I bought 2 of them. So I picked up one for my home pc and one for my office pc. They have a 6 internal speaker array and sub. It has a surprising amount of bass that's very nice. The treble end is a little weak compared to my $1000 Klipsch speakers. But for a $200 system I am totally impressed.

Today I even figured out how to make Windows 10 Groove Music & VLC Player playlists. Life is good in my corner of the universe.
