Default Flatpick plus one finger pick?

Howdy. I know the answer is to "just try it" but does anyone use a normal pick for strumming and picking, and also use a finger pick on a ring finger for pinching an occasional melody note and bass note together?

In the case of a pinch, I'm trying to get that melody note to ring with some volume. The other melody notes were picked with a flat pick, but I need the flat pick for the bass note. Grabbing the melody note with a finger doesn't give a similar tone or volume as the other notes, especially when expecting it to ring over a bass note.

Example: C chord where I want to play the C bass note, pinched with the high e. My ring fingertip alone just isn't getting the job done.

I'm about to order a variety of finger picks and see if I can make this work. But does anyone else actually do this? Or have you tried it? Thanks.

I don't see why not. Essentially, it's a take on "hybrid picking."

I'd say try a fingerpick on the middle and ring, if you're going to go that route. Probably the toughest thing will just be to balance the volume with the flatpick, you might have to try out a few different materials to see what works for you.

Conversely, you could get a bit of nail going on those picking hand fingers, but I personally hate the feel of nails on steel strings.

Thanks. I think you're right. I just don't want to feel like a cyborg with a bunch of weird things on my fingers. A flatpick is fine, but for some reason the idea of wearing fingerpicks gives me the heebies.

But I think you're right. I do play sometimes with thumb and fingers. And my pinkie is seldom used. So maybe a couple fingerpicks could give me the best of both worlds.

Experiment commencing...

Update on this - I tried it and it didn't work. Finger pick gets in the way when strumming and flatpicking. Completely impractical.

Probably easier to do like my friend. He flatpicks but has long enough fingernails on middle, ring and pinky, to embellish more melody notes with finger pluck's
Don't know if there is an official name, Hybrid maybe, he calls it Hippy picken'

Look at some Wayne Henderson videos on youtube. He is a legendary builder, but he also plays with a thumbpick and fingerpicks.
