So sad to hear this news. I expected this when he had to be put on a ventilator. His health has not been good lately, and poor health and Covid19 has been a deadly combination to so many.
He had such a gift for turning the simplest of phrases into something profound. Able to say in just a couple of verses what most can't say in a novel. Godspeed, Mr Prine. The world will remain your stage. |

Thanks for the ride John. One of the most heartwarming concerts that I loved as a 21 year old. Back in 1976 when I moved out of my house. I was listening to a couple of your albums - but I was not prepared for you, the person. That 2 or 3 hours, with Steve.
You and Steve lit everyone up in my new local Arlington Theater. From the down beat.... the first syllables sung... But especially John Prine with your wry inbetween song observations. Bravo! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFD2wZaBciY |

What a sad day. What an inspiration you were John to so many of us who marveled at your gift. The world is a better place because of you.

I only became acquainted with John about eight years ago, when our acoustic trio began playing/rotating Paradise, Illegal Smile, Fish & Whistle, It’s a Big Old Goofy World, and Your Flag Decal... But in that time I learned that he was easily on par with Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell. I think his loss hit me harder than if had it been Dylan or Joni.
This morning my wife suggested her and I do a duo of In Spite of Ourselves. Sounds like the perfect tribute.

I don't get my phone out during concerts, but I did on this one occasion, the very end of his Sept 2018 concert in Memphis. Looking at it now, I like to think he is dancing toward heaven.

When I started playing acoustic guitar in my late 30s, John Prine was the inspiration. So long John, so long.

In a 2018 interview in a beautifully written Pitchfork article by Jayson Greene, Prine said, “I guess I just process death differently than some folks. Realizing you’re not going to see that person again is always the most difficult part about it. But that feeling settles, and then you are glad you had that person in your life, and then the happiness and the sadness get all swirled up inside you. And then you’re this great, awful candy bar, walking around in a pair of shoes.”

We were fortunate to have shared the years with JP at his best and appreciate them too.
All of a sudden the media and some folks seem to all start to realize that the guy who wrote and performed all those great songs had just died. We knew JP and his stuff when they were current and enjoyed them. I'm jealous of the people who caught his shows and even hung with him a bit. Jeez, I'll bet it would've been fun to hang a week-end with JP and Steve Goodman back in '72 or so. Fog |
