Default An interview with your favorite fingerstyle guitarist

Well, actually, it's just me.

Southern Maryland Music Online has me featured as their Artist of the Month for July, and I did this interview with them. They're standard questions, but hey--at least you get to listen to "Trinity" over and over again while reading.

*** *** ***

So that the title of this thread isn't a total disappointment, here's a question for you: If you had a chance to interview your favorite guitarist(s), who would you interview, and what questions would you ask?

Nice going Jim!

ps - 'next two CDs'?? Cool!

to answer your question, I would like to interview classical guitarist John Williams. Not sure what I'd ask though, although 'Do you give lessons' would spring to mind.

Well, I've written a bunch of new original material, and that's the direction I'm most interested in going.

But I'm also working on a bunch of arrangements that would work well for a thematical CD . . . something I'd want to keep completely separate from my original stuff.

So, yeah, I guess I'm hoping to record at least two more.

Well, I've written a few articles for a few magazines over the years, done the interview thing a time or two (both sides of it), and kind of find them a bit boring usually. Alomost like it makes it work instead of entertainment. So with that being said, the guitarist (living) I would most probably like a chance to talk with would be Sotty Anderson. A good question would be something like... "Hey Scotty, you wanna go grab a pizza?" Not like I could play anything he does anyway..

And now I'm off to read Jim's interview.... after listening to his Solo Guitar alot here lately, I don't think his interview will be boring at all.

Hehehe . . . you're in for a surprise.

Seriously, though, I know what you mean about interview typically being a little boring. The one I did used standard, generic questions, so it's tough to make it interesting.

One of the reasons I asked what everyone would ask their favorite guitarists, if given the chance, is to get some ideas . . . perhaps I can prompt interviewers to ask them, or at least answer interesting questions, even if they haven't been asked.

Like this:

Interviewer: How often do you practice?
Me: Not enough. I give lessons, though, and yeah, I'd love to go get pizza.

Jim,
I agree with you. I wish they geared the questions towards you, the player they're interviewing instead of a generic Q&A. It would be more interesting and would mean more to the artist and the readers (I think). Just my thoughts. I still liked your answers anyway.

Pistolero, after watching his video lesson, I think he'd rather get pizza than be interviewed! Somehow though, I think you just *might* be able to keep up with him I think Scotty's one of the best players ever and I wouldn't use that term lightly.

"Hey Tommy".

"We could sit here and go through this boring interview process but I would much rather listen to you play"!

"Please play for me? Anything you want. I'll just sit and listen"!

End of interview.

Rather than do the interview, I'd rather listen to Teri Gross do it on "Fresh Air" - she has a real gift for enthusiastic and interesting questions in a friendly atmosphere.

As for who mine would be? Well, I've heard enough Bruce Cockburn interviews that I'd rather sit and say "so... how do you to THIS, and THIS, and THIS..."

And there are too many, Mr. Tozier included, for me to get around to in this lifetime.

Worry less about the guitars you want. Play the guitar you have more.
The answer will come, and it will not be what you expect.

A guitar is a tool, and a friend. But it is not the answer.

It is the beginning.
