Voice compression

Some unplugged sessions sound really cool to me because the persons voice sounds kind of compressed. Hard to describe but the voice just has a tight sound to it that I don't think is purely the vocalist. Is there a pedal effect that can do this through something like a Roland AC60? Thanks.
