I chose "other" since overall I use and like more Curt Mangan sets than any other brand. I have them currently on one mandolin, a mandola and a mandocello. I think I have them on my Martin Hd-28 right now.

I really like EB aluminum bronze on my archtop guitar. I also really like DR strings, but the Mangan's are just a little better.

Thats really interesting. I wouldnt have guessed Martin would score so high. But doesnt D’Addario also make strings for other brands? I heard somewhere they are one of the oldest continuous operational companies in the world. Seems like Dean Markley really fell off the scene lately.

I voted Elixir (Nano PB for me), and ‘other’ - by which I mean Newtone Masterclass PB.

I answered Elixirs.

Almost all polls fall into a trap of limiting the results by the questions asked. Because of the limiting .012 - .053/.054, I can only qualify my answer to this because I have one six string guitar on which I use this gauge. That is my Alvarez AJ60S. My Taylor Walnut Jumbo wears Mediums, and all the other six strings sport HD gauge .013 - .053. All of them currently wear Elixirs, including my 12 stringers, of which I have two. (two 12's sound familiar?) I've been playing for over 50 years and have used strings by a lot of different manufacturers in a lot of different gauges, and I have settled into PB Elixirs in my septuagenarian years.

I fingerpick all my instruments using my nails as picks. And I use the HD Lights on my largest and smallest six stringers, including my Grand Orchestra, 2 x-200 Jumboes, and their smaller brethren, the 2 Grand Concerts. HDs add a lot to a fingerpicked well-balanced sound, which is why I use them.

So the majority of my guitars do not actually qualify because of a difference of .001 mm on the treble E-string, so there's the loophole in this poll. Or maybe they do because they are inside the overall parameters, but in that case the specific mention of .053 in the gauge range is superfluous because it's within the largest parameter.

I have heard that consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, whatever that really means. Seems double-edged to me.

Don
.
Doesn't matter about your choice of winding alloy or guage. I looked at light guage because I thought that most people use them.

Of course me being an acoustic guitarist and this being , y'know - the "Acoustic Guitar Forum" I didn't think about electric guitar strings.

There's ALWAYS something!

Mostly Straight Up Strings for me. Otherwise, DR’s. One guitar seems to like Elixirs.

I don't want to muddy the waters, but this thread turned me on to newtone masterclass pbs.

I usually play ext-16 lights which are 12-53

Newtone lists their lights as 12-50.

Is that because of the composition (double wound) or is the 50 vs 53 negligible?

Depends on the guitar and what my ears are itching to hear. But generally it’s one of these four - D’Addario, Martin, Elixir Nanos (which sound surprisingly good on my Bourgeois) and “other” (Santa Cruz Mid Tension, my overall favorite).

I see there's a brand listed 'Legacy' in the poll - anyone else not familiar with strings by that name?

EJ 16 on the OO
EJ17 on the dread. EXP17 in the summer (sweaty fingers)
NB on the Rainsong (used to use Monels)
EXP on the rest that get no love anymore. I need to get off my butt and lighten the load.

I use mostly GHS or John Pearse but have recently discovered Lowden strings and really like them. Great feel and tone and they last a good long while. Newtones if I want a round core string.

Best,
Jayne
