In some shots, some of the lighting, yes. Still, all wood varies. I have an Adi-topped Taylor with some dark streaks, I've seen it look quite pale elsewhere. Unless it's specifically "Sinker" redwood, I like redwood to be a bit on the lighter side, in terms of color. I believe it will darken a bit with finish, but I guess that remains to be seen. All I know is I love the sound of a redwood-topped guitar, delivering a warmer tone than Spruce, crisper than Cedar, and capable of good volume when strummed. In my not-too-well-versed opinion, it offers a player the widest range of playing dynamics, sounding great played softly and with a harder attack. I'm sure you're going to love it!

Looking good so far! Avalons are very robust, wear a seatbelt when playing it

Redwood sound
Absolutely beautiful! Stunning! I just love the rosewood that you chose. The grain pattern is even more wonderful-er in the final finish.
In choosing redwood top what are you hoping for in its sound? I'm wondering about the possibility of a redwood topped McIlroy. Though I haven't ruled out an Avalon A2-20 |

My motivation for redwood is mainly to get more crispiness compared to my cedar, whilst retaining the light touch responsiveness.. Before I commissioned this Avalon, I tried a redwood Lowden as a rough yardstick to see if that's what I was looking for... it was, and that Lowden redwood was exactly the sound and response I wanted (but at double the price)! I tried 2 Goodall redwoods before that, and though they were very nice guitars, I felt it didn't give me the touch response like a typical cedar Goodall did. The most satisfying redwood guitar I've tried to date definitely is the Lowden I just described. and I'm hoping that my new Avalon will match or beat that Lowden..!! |
